I watched Free Solo last year and was fascinated by the cinematography, director Jimmy's charisma, and always wanted to see Meru until recently.
In addition to tenacity and dedication to climbing, I will talk about two things that impress me.
Not giving up on Renan. When everyone, including Conrad's wife Jennifer, strongly opposed them to challenge Renan again, they finally decided to take Renan along for the challenge despite their own sway. Seeing the tent hanging on the cliff in the blizzard, Renan slowly fell asleep with a cerebral infarction on the way, Jimmy and Conrad were speechless... I think this is the difference between human nature and human heart. The significance of climbing to the top of Meru is extraordinary, not only because the three of them have realized their dreams, but also because of their fulfillment of each other, the fulfillment of Alex, who is also a teacher and friend of Conrad, and even the fulfillment of the dream of Alex's master.
The story of Conrad and Jennifer. It was introduced in Free Solo, but the protagonist there is not Conrad, as if he just heard a story. I was moved by the story in Meru. Conrad is affectionate and responsible. As a man, a good friend, a husband, a father, and a climber who pursues his own climbing dreams, each of his roles is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
There are many people in the world who love extreme sports, adventure and are eager to challenge nature. I think the reason I prefer Jimmy, Alex H, Conrad "the gang" is that they are not crazy outlaws, but for their families, their loved ones, and cherish their lives. They prepare meticulously and train for a long time for every climb. When you are about to reach the top, you will judge your physical strength and environmental factors, and choose to give up. That kind of giving up requires more courage than risking one's life.
