This is definitely not a movie for people who haven't played the game. The background setting is just a few words. It may be that Mortal Kombat 11's tens of millions of sales gave the producers the courage.
The finishing moves in the movie are still pretty good, and the moves are quite reductive to the game action. The 4-handed prince, the strongest boss character in the first-generation game, was unexpectedly single-killed by the novice protagonist for the 9-time Mortal Kombat champion.
It's a pure fandom movie, that's all.
