the price of human civilization

Henry Yang was born in Kansas, USA. His parents died when he was ten years old, leaving him and his sister to depend on each other. When he was seventeen, in order to get food for his dying sister, he stole five dollars at the post office and was caught and sent to the famous Alcatraz prison, while his sister was sent to the orphanage hospital. Eight years later, Henry and three others planned an escape, two of them were killed by the police on the way to escape, and Henry and Rufus were taken back to prison. It was Rufus who betrayed them, and as a reward, he was treated like the other prisoners, and Henry was locked up in a dungeon called "The Black Hole." Although American law stipulates that prisoners can only be locked in a dungeon for a maximum of 19 days, Henry spent three full years in this hell on earth. During the period, he was tortured physically and mentally, often beaten, "smelling his own excrement and urine every day", and was crippled by the stem of his foot by the jailer... The most ironic thing is that he was cut off by the stem of his foot. It was Christmas and the innocent children outside the window were singing Christmas songs to God.
Henry was convicted of first-degree murder and put on death row when he killed Rufus, who betrayed him, with a spoon on the first day after he got out of the dungeon. James, a young lawyer who just walked out of campus, acts as his defense attorney. During the investigation, they established a relationship of mutual trust and became good friends. In court, they revealed one appalling prison scandal after another. Although Henry died in the end, as he said, they won. James said that Henry taught him what "victory" meant, and I was struck by the word.
This is the main content of the film "Murder in the first" (first degree murder), which tells a true story. The story takes place on an island near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where the infamous Alcatraz prison was born and died. Today, the beautiful island is the most famous tourist destination in northern California, receiving one million tourists each year. I don't know if the tourists who are there today know the history of Alcatelz Prison, and if anyone will remember and pay tribute to these people like Henry who paid a high price for human civilization.
We all know that the history of human civilization is a long history of blood and tears. However, when such a real history was presented to me, I was still shocked, not only for the ugly history, but also for their battle for human civilization. Life goes on, battle goes on, one falls and another rises. Civilization is the final direction of the development of human society, and nothing can stop it. Different eras have different eras of sin and ugliness. From slave society to the present socialist society, sin and ugliness are becoming more and more hidden while decreasing. When we will become the next Henry, the only thing we have to do is not to give up , even death becomes meaningful. At the end of the film's story, civilization triumphs over barbarism, and they pay a brutal price.
It may be cruel, but it is also fair.

Maybe there is still a big gap between the movie and the real events, but the abuse Henry suffered and the several heated debates in the court shocked me. I always feel that the relationship between the perverted murderer and the defense lawyer is one of the most beautiful relationships in the world~ 4.5

Murder in the First quotes

  • James Stamphill: Unlike many men who lived long after, Henry Young did not die in vain. In the end he was not afraid. He lived and he died in triumphed. If only we could all do that.

  • Henri Young: Action - I won. Reaction - you can't ever take that away from me.
