"Minari" Reborn Minari
In the 1980s, Korean-American Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica (Ye-ri Han) bought a small farm in Arkansas, and brought their daughter Anne with them. (Noel Cho Noel Cho) and their son David (Alan S. Kim) and their family drove from California to this place where birds don't shit, and they lived in a dilapidated house with a leak.
Farming is inseparable from water. Jacob started to find a water scavenger to find a well-drilling spot. But when I heard it was going to cost money, I decided to do it myself. When starting a business, everything is about being diligent and thrifty and keeping your home. You can save as much as you can, not to mention that you don’t know how reliable these people are. Farming is inherently hard work. Of course Jacob is not afraid, he is here to fight a turnaround. He used to live by raising chickens in California, and after he came here, he still worked on a chicken farm. But Monica doesn't like this kind of life. She had a good life in California, but now she has moved here, starting from scratch, and with two young children, the uncertain future makes her worry, so she always wants to go back to California with her children and go back to the old days. Safe days. However, because of Jacob's insistence, she finally brought her mother, the child's grandmother (played by Yeo-jeong Yoon), into the house.
But she is not the grandmother in the hearts of the children. She doesn't cook. She either sits in front of the TV or plays cards by herself all day long. She has a strange smell on her body. When unhappy, he also swears. Therefore, at the beginning, he failed to get the love of his two little grandsons. David also secretly gave her his own urine to drink. Needless to say, Dad gave him a bad beating. But my grandmother is my grandmother. She often takes her children out for a walk. Gradually, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren has changed little by little. Grandma also planted water celery in a small open space by the river, and they can take care of it often.
It was really unpredictable, my grandmother suffered a stroke. Although they survived, it was impossible to take them to see cress. And this bad news, but also brought a happy event. The doctor told them that the hole in David's heart was repaired by himself, and now he can be as mischievous as a normal boy.
Jacob drove six hours that day to a Korean supermarket in Cincinnati and successfully sold his produce, and arranged for them to be delivered in the future. Unexpectedly, after coming out of the store, Monica told him that he didn't want to continue such a life. She's taking the baby back to California.
When my grandmother was at home alone, she also contributed to the family. She wanted to burn the garbage at home, but she accidentally burned the house. Fortunately, at this time, Jacob saw the fire on the way home. Finally, the family caught up and put out the fire, but the house and stored crops were burned.
The new year has begun, and on a sunny day, Jacob and his wife invited a water scavenger to help him find water, ready to work hard.
As a nation of immigrants, America has stories of immigrants. But this time it's an Asian story.
In the United States, the vast majority of immigrants are hard-working ones. Koreans are a special group. Jacob is a classic example of immigrant hard work. For the sake of his own ideals, he abandoned his stable life and faced an unknown future. I don't even have the support of my wife. In fact, everyone may have such an encounter when they go to an unfamiliar place. Whether in the country from the countryside to the city, or from China to the world. Courage is indispensable. Because of this, everyone can have a similar story. The director himself grew up on a farm in Arkansas, and of course the story is based on his own childhood experiences.
Immigrants not only have to create their own new jobs, they also have to find ways to integrate into the local society. For Asians, this is almost hopeless. Often in the end, we can only hug together with fellow villagers to keep warm. Therefore, on weekends, the Jacobs go to the chapel. This is a small place. There is no Korean chapel, and the American one is fine (plus, many international students who come to the United States also go to the chapel for this reason). So in the end it was Chinese and Chinese, gathered in Chinatown, and Koreans and Koreans lived in Koreatown. For myself, although I have been to many companies, met many kind-hearted Americans, worked overtime together, and went out to lunch together, in the end, only Shanghainese friends remained.
Minari means water celery in Korean, so you'll have to find out for yourself if it's related to the story.
