Sex workers are the hardest to photograph, the same all over the world, whether the industry is legalized in which country or not. Ross Kaufman and Zena Brisque use an 85-minute documentary to tell the stories of children living in the red light district of Kolkata, India, and teach them photography.
Every child is an angel with broken wings, it doesn't matter where they grow up. Curious children soon showed amazing talent. Their photographs could be turned into a calendar by Amnesty International to raise money for charity, and the proceeds from Sotheby's auctions would be used to help them out of their predicaments. Several large-scale group exhibitions were held. One of them, the little boy named Ma Ji, can represent everyone to participate in the one-week World Press Photo Foundation held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands... "Born in a Brothel", the film also won the 77th Academy Award for Best Documentary.
The director who filmed them, Briscoe, was a New York journalist by profession, and through her tireless efforts, these children could eventually get into a charity school. The helping hand was fruitful. Some of the little guys went to school in the United States, but the little girl named "Baby" ended up becoming a prostitute, even though she held the golden statue in the Oscar hall a year ago... ... Obviously, prostitutes cannot be regarded as a glorious profession by any means. The swear words that the prostitutes scolded and attacked each other in the film are also expressed in this way, which is enough to show that the values of all people in the world are actually similar.
It can be interpreted as fate, or it can be said that there is a difference between human individual desire and greed, no matter what, this is life, it is life. Documentary is just a tool with the magic power of image recording, although it can sometimes change someone's destiny.
Most people will strive very hard in this world for a decent life while defending their dignity as much as possible. It's just that everyone is confined to the rivers and lakes and can't help themselves. If there is a chance encounter, and then you gain a certain right to speak, that is to say at least when you have enough time to change the direction of your life... Where to go? This doesn't seem to be a problem anymore, the problem is really how to choose and how to do it.
May everyone living in this world have a wonderful future, no matter where you were born!
