Tonight I watched Kobayashi Masaki's 1962 work "Cut the Belly". It won the Grand Jury Prize at the 16th Cannes Film Festival.
Before watching it, I took it literally and thought it was a cruel movie. After reading it, I realized I was wrong.
Chekov's narrative. The stories are interlocking, echoing back and forth. The acting, shot scheduling, lighting, and music were simply impeccable. There has long been a conclusion about this kind of masterpiece in film history.
The film discusses the proposition about "under what circumstances does dignity exist". Without adequate discussion, dignity cannot escape the fate of being dwarfed. On the other hand, it is unclear to what extent the status quo of prosperity is supported by false dignity.
Death is the biggest proposition. When there is the ability or the opportunity to face it, endless absurdity will naturally be born. The sadness, bravery, grievance and cowardice in the film are relentlessly displayed on the screen. The story is an old story, but the truth is never outdated.
