Yesterday, I watched the Tom and the Mouse live-action movie version (2021) with my son, and finally understood why there was so much scolding on the Internet. Let me tell you the plot of the movie, so that I can make a simple analysis. Probably Tom and Jerry both left their hometown in the country and came to New York, Jerry sneaked into the luxurious Royal Gate Hotel (the royal gate hotel does not seem to be a real hotel), and at this time the hotel was about to undertake the wedding of a big star, to replace Chloe Moretz, who was hired by someone else's resume, was tasked with driving away Jerry. To this end, Chloe Moretz hired Tom, who was also down on the street. A pair of happy foes start a house-breaking campaign in a hotel, screwing up a lavish wedding. But in the end, with the strong support of the director, it was forcibly reversed, and a simple wedding was held, and the bride said, "I don't want a luxury wedding. As long as you (referring to the groom), this matter will be resolved." It's a big happy ending. Netizens complained very much about the movie, most of which focused on the old-fashioned and thin plot, and the inability to integrate two-dimensional animation and live-action scenes. If I say, the biggest problem with this movie is not in these two places. It’s not a big mistake for a cartoon to have a thin and old-fashioned plot. The plot of the bear infested in the Wild Continent released in the Spring Festival is also very old-fashioned. People who have watched more movies can basically guess the ending after reading the beginning. The 2D animations aren't that bad either, at least I don't see any inconsistencies.
The biggest problem with this movie is the positioning and characterization of the characters. After watching the movie and looking back carefully, you will find that there are almost no positive characters in the film! When Chloe Moretz was applying for a job, he lied and replaced other people's resumes. This is already a serious issue involving integrity. If she can really show her ability after applying for the job, it's just that she lacks opportunities, and everyone may forgive her. Unfortunately, she only played the role of a stringer and a vase, and the only task of catching mice was a mess. After the responsible Indian (?) supervisor was suspended, Heihua deliberately released Tom Jerry at the wedding to sabotage. The manager who looks a lot like Saddam (don't know it) is indiscriminately favoring Chloe Moretz - probably a face control. Needless to say, Jerry and Tom don't have much time to play, and they are almost always sabotaging in the film. In the end, it was a good thing to propose a simple wedding to get the bride back - and then they were the ones who screwed up the wedding. , not even making up for it.
The biggest problem in the design of this plot is that the cat and mouse were reduced from the protagonist to the supporting role, and they also assumed the responsibility of destroying the main flow of the story (the wedding), which is generally only the treatment of the villain. And as some comments have said, it's just funny that cats and mice wreak havoc in the animated short film. When combined with the real scene, I can't help worrying about compensation, and I also feel bad for the cleaning staff who are responsible for cleaning up the mess. This kind of tearing of reality and animation also greatly reduces the evaluation of the movie. I don't know how Warner's mentally handicapped script passed the review.
Contrasting with bears, the early animated short films were hostile relationships, and they destroyed each other. In the big movies, you also know to find a third-party force to stand in a larger hostile camp, such as the rich second generation who steals children, and the perverted genius who catches fairy tale characters. The villain who catches the mountain god, and even this ambitious scientist recently, has created a reasonable reason for the protagonist to cooperate. As for the villain's tool man, it's good to change it for the next one, anyway, everyone is not coming to him.
There is a lack of villains and enough plot conflicts in Tom and Jerry, and we can only make jokes by tearing down the house. It doesn't matter in the short film, it will be over in a few minutes, and the next one will be restored to its original state without any exaggeration, but it is obviously not possible for a big movie. Enlarging the real-life scene to cover up this problem has created a new problem of the protagonists' playing time of cats and mice being too low, causing my five-year-old son to ask every now and then while watching a movie, "Dad, where's the cat?" Dad, where did the mouse go?
In fact, if I want to say that this problem can be greatly improved by changing the plot, such as expanding the episode of the bride throwing the ring (in the movie, Jerry stole the decoration of his home, and then returned it back, isn't it quite damaging? figurative?), the bride accidentally dropped the ring out of the window and was picked up by stray cats on the street (those who threatened Tom). Chloe Moretz didn't know how to find it, Jerry and Tom volunteered to help (here can be changed, Chloe had already discovered that Jerry and Tom were secretly staying in the hotel, and took them in out of kindness, but agreed You can't be found in the hotel, during this period you can intersperse with some jokes about how to hide from people and steal food from the kitchen). Exaggerated house demolition scenes can all be placed in the home of stray cats, such as an abandoned factory. Simple, after dismantling the stray cat, you can enter the happy ending of the wedding. I feel that the time is not enough and can be further expanded. The stray cat is not reconciled when the diamond ring is sent back, and sneaks into the hotel to destroy it. Tom and Jerry are in a hurry to keep the wedding scene from being destroyed, and then enter a happy ending. If the theme is forcibly raised, the stray cat can also succeed. Although the stray cat was caught, the wedding was destroyed, the bride ran away in a hurry, and then turned to the current ending.
I reckon that although this plot is also very old-fashioned, it is better than having Chloe Moretz playing more time than Tom Jerry, who has become a half villain.
In the end, after complaining for so long, it's okay for dad to lead the child to watch this movie. Dad looks at Chloe Moretz, and the kid looks at cats and mice. One thing to say, Chloe Moretz looks really good when she loses weight.
In the end, many scenes in the movie are tribute (copy?) animated shorts. In addition, all kinds of tricks in the short film - the big dog Spike (his son did not appear), the queen cat, the little goldfish, the little bird, etc. all came out to show their faces. So this movie is okay to just watch the lively memories of childhood, but I can't think about it.
