Michael
Judge Sarah faces charges, and only a guilty plea can save her job. Michael persuaded her to plead guilty. Although Sarah realized that someone deliberately did not want her to try Carlo’s case, she still handed the case to Michael for trial based on her trust in Michael.
Adam
Teacher Franny is about to quit her job and look for a job near NYU, where Adam is going, so she can stay with Adam.
But Adam lied that NYU didn't admit him.
Michael received a letter from NYU for Adam. He happily informed Adam's godfather, Senator Charlie, and grandmother, Elizabeth, to celebrate in the evening.
Adam goes to Fia, who first sees Adam using an asthma inhaler. Adam told Fia that his mother wanted him to "dig deeper into the beauty of life and not go for the wider world".
Adam announced that he was taking a year off from school at Michael's dinner to celebrate his acceptance.
Michael didn't know why Adam didn't want to go to college, so he asked Franny, his teacher, to persuade his son.
Carlow trial
The first court hearing:
The prosecution lawyer showed that Carlo had the nature, motive, and opportunity to murder Coffey; that the tall Carlo could only defend himself with "justifiable defense"; in addition, she also played Carlo's father, gang boss Jimmy A recording of a phone call that warned the son in advance that the police were about to arrest him indicated that they had a source with the police.
Michael asked the jury to ignore Jimmy's phone call recordings, citing "prone to mislead the jury."
Carroll's defense attorneys started with the cell being the prisoner's temporary "home", explaining that Coffey's presence in Carroll's cell was an intentional violation.
During the first adjournment:
A juror left a note to the judge asking "Does the case law say No self defense in prison cells?" "It is estimated that the law does stipulate that there is no self-defense in the cell.
Inspector Nancy told Coffey's attorney, Lee, that Cusack, who was in the station, was related to the Baxters family. Lee realizes that the replacement of Sarah's lawyer may have been done by the Baxters. Because Judge Sarah has always been open about her hatred of the Baxters.
Nancy comes to Michael and tells him that Judge Sarah may have had an inside story. But Michael refused to believe Nancy's words, citing that Officer Cusack would testify for the prosecution. In addition, he said that the whole thing (replacement of judges by black box operation) has no evidence, let Nancy not just believe her own subjective speculation. Michael also asked Nancy not to tell the prosecution attorney.
Second trial:
The black man who had been maimed by Carlo testified to prove the brutality of Carlo.
Michael appears to have inadvertently asked about the witnesses' tattoos.
So the defense lawyer followed this clue and explained that the witness may have perjured out of loyalty to the gang on the grounds that the black man was a member of the desire gang.
The prosecution lawyer revisited the trial process of that year, the same lawyer, the same defense word "justifiable defense", but the jury of the year sided with the black people and convicted Carlo in court. Judge Sarah at the time directly ruled that Caro was a "racist, liar, thug". This offsets the defense's denigration of witnesses.
Trial 3: Officer Cusack testifies
He confirmed that Coffey was arrested for driving the car that killed Carroll's brother Rocco and fled.
The defense proved that Coffey was cruel by nature on the grounds that Coffey looked relaxed and nonchalant on the day of his arrest.
Before the end of the day's trial:
Michael introduced new regulations "not allowed to discuss the case with anyone, not to disclose the trial situation to the media, not to read any reports on the case" to avoid outside interference. No juror shall be allowed to violate or be disqualified from jury for contempt of court.
After the trial:
Michael entered the trial court again, compared the handwriting of the jurors one by one, and found the juror who wrote him the note.
At the restaurant where Michael and his family were having dinner, Jimmy showed up and asked Michael why he wanted the black man who had been maimed by Carlo to testify. Michael explained that it was the only way he could gain the jury's trust and ultimately lead them to their desired outcome. Jimmy said "only number in here is mine" (you are the only one on my side) and asked him to tell him what specific actions he had done before ten o'clock on the third day. Elizabeth saw Jimmy and the others leave.
Trial the next day: The forensic doctor testified that the deceased was beaten to death.
When the prosecution was about to show the jury a photo of Coffey's beating, Michael refused, citing too much irritation to the jury. The prosecution could only describe in words that Coffey's skull had particles embedded in the solid wall, indicating the intensity of the violence Coffey was subjected to at the time. The lawyer simulated the action at the trial court, which shocked the audience.
After the trial, Michael found the juror who handed him the note, found the records of searching for relevant laws and regulations on her mobile phone, and persuaded her to leave on the grounds of violating the regulations of the trial. And promises that even if she leaves, Carlo will lose.
lawyer
Attorney Lee told Coffey's younger brother Eugene not to assume the gang would take care of him all the time. Many younger brothers are eventually abandoned by the big ones. But Eugene didn't believe her.
Lee promises Eugene to help him sell the star-signed baseball that Coffey left him. Michael gave the ball to Adam.
