Locke--Unable to Maintain an Absolutely Rational Life

"Locke" was the first film I saw.To be honest, after watching it, I was convinced, and what I thought in my mind was: Damn, this screenwriter and director are too skilled. This movie must be super economical to shoot. There is only one actor in the entire film, one road scene, and the protagonist is driving to the hospital throughout the film. The development of the plot is entirely driven by telephone conversations, and it shows four groups of conflicts and contradictions. Not only is the image of the protagonist very vivid and vivid, but even the images of the supporting characters who only appear in the telephone conversation from beginning to end are very vivid.

The first set of contradictions is the contradiction in terms of career. At five o'clock the next morning, the cement irrigation project in charge of Locke was about to start, and he gave up this very important project in order to go to the hospital. After being scolded by his boss, he was fired. There is also a sense of suspense here; what is it that compels Locke to forego such an important job in order to visit the hospital?Going back to this line, although he was fired, he did not trust the newly dispatched person in charge. He insisted that his subordinates would not answer the calls of the person in charge and do everything according to his orders. It can be seen that Locke is a paranoid and controlling person.

The second set of conflicts is family conflicts. When he drove to the hospital, he should have been at home, watching football games with his children and his wife. The dialogue between him and the child here shows the sense of picture and describes the action scene. Through the dialogue, the scene of the home can be established in the audience's mind. The wife, who is making sausages, and the child who is screaming for the goal are very warm. family picture But later, Locke confessed to his wife the reason for going to the hospital. The warm family picture was completely broken. The two children were ignorant from the beginning to uneasy, while the mother kept herself in the bathroom, communicated with her sister, and decided to talk to her. He is divorced.

The third set of conflicts is the conflict with his mistress, which is why he went to the hospital. Locke had a one-night stand with his secretary after a celebration dinner, and it made the secretary's bead become dark. The secretary is a dull, lonely, and sensitive middle-aged woman who wants to keep the child. And the day the story happened was the day she gave birth. Here, combined with the story of the cheerful wife who has not yet known the news, there is a concept of dramatic irony. That is, the audience knows the reason why Locke cheated and went to the hospital, but as the character wife in the story, she does not know yet.

The fourth set of contradictions is Locke's dialogue with the dead father in his mind. The psychological reasons explain why Locke would put down an important job and a happy family to see an illegitimate child who was not born by the person he loved. Because Locke was an illegitimate child abandoned by his biological father, he did not want to repeat his father's mistakes; he wanted to get rid of his father's influence on him; and he wanted to prove to his father that he was not a person who dared not admit mistakes and take responsibility.

In the interview, the director mentioned that Locke was inspired by the British philosopher John Locke, who believed that all human behaviors can be explained by reason.Obviously, the director did not support the idea of the Rockists. Locke's original image in the movie is undoubtedly a very rational person. Although he has a humble background, he has achieved the status of supervisor through his own efforts. He has not done a single thing wrong in ten years of work, and his family is happy and healthy. The irrational derailment made it all fall apart. As "The Wandering Earth" said, "It is an extravagant hope to keep human beings forever sane."

Finally, there is an open ending. With the cry of the baby, Locke is still on the way to the hospital, just like life, always on the road. There is no so-called ending, until he dies. We don't know what kind of job Locke will find in the future, whether he will get his wife's forgiveness or start a new family life with a mediocre mistress... just like we don't know where our lives will go, even if it is a static life. In fact, it may be accompanied by accidental events and accidents at any time.

All in all, the dialogue in the movie "Rock" is really wonderful, not simply explaining events, but layer upon layer suspension, layer by layer advancement, promoting the development of the story and the change of emotions. In just 90 minutes, it discusses the uncertain life and brings together the crises encountered by some middle-aged men, such as career crises, family crises, women's crises, and the influence of the original family on people's growth choices.
