hard drive has been put on the hard disk for more than a year, but I have read it in one breath during the Chinese New Year. I
talked about 80 years of American high school students. The first thing that comes to my mind is sex, drug and rock&roll, Freaks and Geeks. The restricted areas involved are far more than these: parents will peek at their daughter’s diary; sons will find out about the father’s affair; the teacher will become his prospective stepfather; even the boy in love will be told that his girlfriend was not a standard girl when he was born ! As creator Paul Feig said in an interview, "We never want to give any lessons on the show". Exempting preaching, Feig and Apatow just want to restore a real high school life circle they lived in. There are no absolute bad guys in the film, let alone absolute perfection. The only masked character is just a bad guy math teacher-the kind of mythical figure that everyone will recall when they look back on their middle school career.
Another major success of Freaks and Geeks is the casting. Whether it is freak, geek, parents, or teachers, all of them can be remembered. Having seen James Franco’s slacker image here, you won’t be surprised for the handsome Spider-Man acting as the goofy drug dealer in the Pineapple Express; Jason Segel’s Nick and How I met your mother and Frogetting Sarah Marshall are similar, but acting It is much more pure and charming than deliberately acting stupid later; Thomas Wilson, who is well-known as a bully in Back to the Future, the physical education teacher here has succeeded in making people fear first, then respect and love; what’s more interesting is that, Seth Rogen, the lightest and lowest paid of the eight protagonists, is now the biggest player in the gang.
The year is set in 1980, rock music is indispensable, even as important as the motivation of the protagonist or the serial clues of a single episode. The golden tunes from The Who, Grateful Dead, Van Halen, and Rush are an important part of the original soundtrack of the series. The soundtrack based on Michael Andrews' acoustic guitar also adds a touch of nostalgia to the nostalgia.
American high schools are quite different from ours, but the basic structure may not be so different. Who dares to say that there is no "sporty", "violent" or "freak" or "nerd" in your middle school? Watching this series will definitely evoke a lot of memories from your youth, whether it’s about friendship, sprouting or rebellion...
