rejoice in pain

Andrei Tarkovsky's films are all good, but obscure.

After watching his film, I wondered what the director was talking about.

"Sacrifice" is Andrei Tarkovsky's last work before his untimely death, a Swedish film directed by him.

In Andrei Tarkovsky's work, "Sacrifice" may be a "little work", that is, not so subtle.

What the protagonist wants is to be with the maid, and he can't break free from the existing family.

Having an existing family is a responsibility and a shackle to the protagonist. "Where's the little guy?" is the embodiment of responsibility, and it also shows the protagonist's intentional or unintentional negligence of responsibility.

The protagonist imagines the extreme situation of a nuclear war, so that he can put down his scruples and pick up the maid. Even so, the protagonist hesitates and fantasizes about dedicating himself to the maid in the noble name of saving his family.

When the dream wakes up, the protagonist who has tasted the sweetness makes up his mind. He burns down the beautiful house on the seafront, which symbolizes family responsibility and shackles. The burning of the house was the price and sacrifice for his betrayal of his family.

And finally? The protagonist still can't escape his guilt, and he is taken away by an ambulance called by himself (the doctor). The role of the doctor and the protagonist are really one. The doctor represents the responsible and rational side, and the protagonist represents the laissez-faire and emotional side.
