Rope (1948)
Before watching this movie, I never heard of it. After watching it, I realized that this is the famous "one shot" movie. Alfred Hitchcock is also a movie urchin and likes to do some new tricks.
Alfred Hitchcock's movies are not seen much, but I know that there are always dying people in his movies, and this movie is no exception. It still tells the story of murder. Two top students who graduated from prestigious universities strangled their classmates with ropes and put them in a large bookcase. They planned to sink it into the lake after dark. The two of them also arranged some friends for a party at night. One of the murderers was very arrogant. He decided to use the bookcase containing the dead body as a dining table, so that he would not be found out, and he could satisfy his arrogant thoughts. The people invited came one after another, including the parents of classmates, fiancée and ex-boyfriend of the fiancée, and the housekeeper of their college. They also invited the classmate himself, but he will definitely not be there. At the party everyone chats, eats, drinks, and waits for the one who will never come. In the chat, the arrogant ex-boyfriend of the murderers hinted at the classmate’s fiancée. He and the classmate’s fiancée still had a chance. In addition, the murderer with poor psychological quality was also angry because of a joke, which caused the dormitory’s Notice. The classmates never came, everyone was very anxious, and the party had to end hastily. When leaving, the wardens found the classmate's hat, which made him more suspicious. After everyone left, the murderers prepared to leave, but the dormitory returned. Under the coercion of the dormitory, the one with poor psychological quality finally collapsed, and the arrogant one had to tell the truth. It turns out that they kill people just to satisfy their superiority of being a superior person. Later, the wardens shot outside the window, and the neighbor called the police, and the movie ended.
This is a very extreme movie, and this extreme refers to the way that "one shot" makes a complete movie. Through the "one" long lens, the story of the movie is told from beginning to end, which is absolutely amazing from a technical point of view. In fact, the film is not really one-shot, because of the limitations of technology and equipment, there are four connections in the film. Excluding the plot conversion deliberately made by one of the directors-that is the shot of the dormitory's thinking, the other three are cleverly connected through plots or pictures, all giving people the feeling of a long shot. Throughout the history of world film, there are not many films comparable to this extreme way of expression. With this point alone, the film will naturally be recorded in the annals of history. As for the introduction and explanation of the long shots of this film, there are quite a lot of information on the Internet, so I won't say more.
"One shot" is very advanced and great in terms of film technology, but this way of expression is not suitable for the audience from the perspective of the viewer, at least not for me. Because a lens is to be used, the development space of the movie story must be very small, in this film, it is a big room. In such a big room, there is not much room for the development of the storyline. Except for characters walking around and some smaller-scale activities, the rest can only rely on movie dialogue to promote the plot. Movies that rely on dialogue to promote the plot often need topics worth thinking about, such as "Love at Sunset" and "Love Before Dawn", or with attractive suspense, such as "This Man Comes From Earth", to make the movie Become good-looking. However, this film has neither attractive suspense nor topics worth thinking about, so it is very boring. Recalling the dialogue in this film, apart from the short stories of the parents, the cover-up of the murderer, and the coercion of the dormitory, there is no attraction. Although the choreographer set up suspense—whether things are revealed, I have already guessed the ending when I watched more Hollywood movies. It must be justice triumphs over evil, and the bad guys are brought to justice. Such a cliché ending will definitely not appeal to me. So, a group of people sitting in the room talking dryly, and there are still trivial gossips, what's the point of such a movie? In addition, because of a single shot, the screen of the movie cannot express the emotions of the characters from multiple angles and characters like regular movies, nor can it express the progress of the plot through the changes of the screen, which reduces the ability of the movie to tell the story. For example, the picture in the film can only show the picture of one scene at the same time. When the camera is aimed at one person, we don't know what other people are doing, and we can only hear the sound. Such a single picture always makes me feel that something is missing, as if I have watched half of a movie. And some of the pictures in the movie give people a feeling of depression, especially when it is close-up of a thing. In short, the "one shot" movie feels very special and alternative at first glance, but for the movie itself, it is not the best choice.
As for the theme of the film, it has already been said in the film: the division of racial hierarchy is a Nazi view, and the director must oppose it and criticize it. Looking back at the time when the movie was released, it was 1948. There must be many people who have this idea. Alfred Hitchcock's choice of this theme is also quite useful. But looking at it now, the argument of "ethnic hierarchy" is quite silly, just look at the current situation in the United States. How many real white-skinned whites are there in the United States now? The mixed races are all mixed, and it will not take long for the whites to disappear in the United States.
There are two things worth noting about this movie: First, the two murderers have an ambiguous relationship. Are they gay? Alfred Hitchcock is quite avant-garde. The film is not just a shot to the end, but also involves the topic of homosexuality. He has the courage. Secondly, this is a color film, a color film of 1948, and also Alfred Hitchcock's first color film. It's not easy. I can finally see the luxurious interior decoration and the beautiful women.
As for the actors, apart from James Stewart's familiar face, Farley Granger is also familiar. Some time ago, he had just watched "The Train Stranger" starring him. Their two performances were average and did not impress me too much, especially James Stewar, who was too mediocre. When it comes to acting, another male protagonist John Dall is outstanding. He has perfectly performed the character's arrogant, arrogant, and cynical character, and he feels like an elegant villain. But the Chinese information about him is blank. Joan Chandler, the only young woman actor in this film, is very beautiful, but she is not famous at all. Her photos on the Internet are so few and there are zero Chinese materials.
In general, a movie that is very good in form, but not good in plot. This film can be used as a textbook for film academies, but it is not for the public to appreciate.
