If it is said that entering the theater is to enjoy the visual culture, the most attractive thing for me is not the special effects feast under IMAX 3D, but the pure animation film is enough. Personally, the visual enjoyment brought by a good animated film is no less than that of a blockbuster, so if you can go to the theater to enlarge the experience, it will be a worthwhile trip.
Today I would like to recommend three picture book style movies from Cartoon Saloon in Ireland .
This small studio with only three founders, located in a small Irish town, has so far produced three animated films that have been nominated for Oscars. They are: The Secret of the Book of Kells in 2009, Song of the Sea in 2014 and The Breadwinner in 2017.
The most famous of them should be "Song of the Sea" in 2014. This is based on an Irish folklore, telling the story of the little boy Ben and the "Seal Elf" sister Saoirse returning from the city to their hometown on the island. If you say that the style of painting is beautiful, it should be the first thing that comes to your mind.
If "Song of the Sea" is a soft and beautiful bedtime story, then "The Breadwinner" is more face-to-face. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Canadian author Deborah Ellis, "The Breadwinner" tells the story of Parwana, an 11-year-old Afghan girl who disguises herself as a man under the Taliban rule. Because of the background of the story, the overall style and color are calm, but this does not hinder the performance of artistic techniques in the film, especially the paper-cut style in another story line paralleled by Parvana's mouth, which is full of the beauty of national stories .
But compared to the first two, I personally prefer the less mature "Secret of the Book of Kells", which tells the story of Brandon, a young monk who lived in the tower of the monastery since he was a child, to help the painter Edan to complete the "Secret of the Book of Kells". The drawn story of the Book of Kells. This film shows an abstract and exotic Irish national style. You can see intricate lines, fine decorations and multiple colors. In the performance of the mysterious stream of consciousness, whether it is the elf-like Atherin, or the magnificent The Book of Kells, all impressed me.
So beautiful, every frame is a wallpaper. I especially like the final image processing of Brandon and Itami walking around to complete the drawing of the Book of Kells, showing the passage of time and the movement of space through the perspective of three windows.
Although you can give full marks for the performance of the picture, the soundtracks of these three films are also worth extra praise: Le chant de la mer of "Song of the Sea" is sung by her mother, and the music of "The Breadwinner" The crown sleeps is Suleiman's unfinished story, and the Aisling Song of The Secret of the Book of Kells is Atherin's beautiful ethereal spirit that never goes away.
Finally, look forward to the new work "Wolf Walker" by Cartoon Salon——
