I believe that when Eddie Redmayne took over this book, he was determined to become the first protagonist Felicity Jones with director Tom Harbour. The advancement of the whole story is very similar to Jones's "The Revenant" exploration, with high effort in exchange for efficient income. The studio shot of the scene on the high-altitude hot air balloon is a test of the director's judgment on the light and the way of framing. Generally speaking, it is handled well. The rain, fog, frost, and butterfly snow trickle change frequently. Of course, the part of the ground dialogue is still slightly more, if the proportions are adjusted, the dramatic conflict effect will be better.

The wiki of this movie said that the actual liftoff in history broke the world record and reached 11,887 meters (38,999 feet), which felt ridiculous. I continued to read Glaisher's wiki and said that it reached 9,500~10,900 meters. Coxwell's The wiki says that it is 10,700~11,300 meters, and one data is higher than the other... But there is a data in the wiki of the two pilots that is relatively consistent, that is, it is mentioned that they both fainted and lost consciousness at around 8800 meters, and the coxwell was turned on before fainting. Deflate the valve, can the balloon continue to rise after the valve is opened? The 10,000-meter+ height statement can only be explained that Coxwell had reached 10,000 meters+ before opening the air valve (and another hypoxia that was more than 1,000 meters high and had been fainting and did not die), and the height of Mount Everest was in the early 8800s. It is already an inhuman environment. The pilots of World War I usually fly at or below 20,000 feet without oxygen supply. The open cockpit of World War II aircraft also needs oxygen supply to 20,000 feet.

TIFF2019.09.08 Eddie and Felicity reunite again after The Theory of Everything. You can probably tell what they are talking about by looking at the poster and the title. The story is half-real and half-fictional. It restores the adventure of two hot air balloon travelers more than 100 years ago. The high-altitude part is quite exciting, and the group of butterflies in the clouds is so beautiful. Other than that, the rest of it is just mediocre.

The Aeronauts quotes

  • James Glaisher: Newton said that we build too many walls...

Amelia Wren: I don't want to hear it from Newton. I want to hear from you.

James Glaisher: All my life I've found comfort in science. It helps give meaning to the many things we can't control. It brings a degree of order to the chaos that surrounds us. But whilst we may be able to explain the science behind an aureole, or falling snow, it's not possible to account for its beauty. Together we've brought the stars closer.

Amelia Wren: We HAVE brought the stars closer.

  • Arthur Glaisher: Th-These things that people are saying about you, James, don't-don't... don't they hurt?

James Glaisher: I wish it didn't hurt you.
