today called Tofu to watch high IQ movies together, so we watched David Lynch’s Lost Highway
story in the evening, which is roughly divided into several parts.
Part 1.
Fred heard someone ring the doorbell, and someone said outside the door: Dick Laurent is dead. He Open the door, but no one is found.
Part 2
things started very depressively. Fred is going to work. He is a Tenor saxophone performer. His wife Renee said that he would read books at home in the evening. So I didn't go with him.
Fred played hard at the performance, which was very noisy. After the performance, he called home. Many extensions in the house rang, but no one answered the phone, indicating that his wife was not at home.
When he got home, his wife was sleeping in bed.
Strange things began.
The next day, Renee went out to pick up the letter and found a large envelope at the door with a video tape inside. The two watched this videotape together and found that it was a very short video. They filmed the door of their home. Renee guessed that the agent of the house stayed. When they were making each other in the evening, Fred was defeated very quickly (unable to do what he wanted), Renee comforted him and said: That is fine...
On the third day, a new videotape came, and the videotape entered the house, and then When I arrived in the bedroom, there were two people lying on the bed, as if they were both without heads. Renee was nervous, so he called the police. After the police came, there was a very interesting conversation
Ed: Do you own a video camera?
Renee Madison: No. Fred hates them.
Fred Madison: I like to remember things my own way.
Ed: What do you mean by that?
Fred Madison: How I remembered them. Not necessarily the way they happened.
(Dialogue 1)
But the police didn’t find any useful clues, so the case didn’t end.
After some time, the Fred couple went Renee's friend's Andy's party, Renee and Andy's relationship is very ambiguous, which makes Fred very unhappy. Then he saw a strange-looking person with scary white skin, no eyebrows and beard. That person walked by and started a conversation with Fred
Mystery Man: We've met before, haven't we.
Fred Madison: I don't think so. Where was it you think we met?
Mystery Man: At your house . Don't you remember?
Fred Madison: No. No, I don't. Are you sure?
Mystery Man: Of course. As a matter of fact, I'm there right now.
Fred Madison: What do you mean? You're where right now?
Mystery Man: At your house.
Fred Madison: That's fucking crazy, man.
Mystery Man: Call me. Dial your number. Go ahead.
Mystery Man: Call Me. Dial your number. Go ahead.
[Fred dials the number and the Mystery Man answers]
Mystery Man: [over the phone] I told you I was here.
Fred Madison: [amused] How'd you do that?
Mystery Man: Ask me.
[Fred's facial expression turns from amused to serious as he's clearly rembering the anonymous video tapes]
Fred Madison: [angrily into the phone] How did you get inside my house?
Mystery Man: [voice] You invited me. It is not my custom to go where I am not wanted.
Fred Madison: [into the phone] Who are you?
[Both Mystery Men laugh mechanically]
Mystery Man : [voice] Give me back my phone.
[Fred gives the cell phone back to the man in front of him]
Mystery Man: It's been a pleasure talking to you.
(Dialog 2)
After the conversation, Fred was very scared, and then he took Renee and left. There is also a paragraph here I think the dialogue is very important.
Fred Madison: How did you meet that asshole Andy, anyway?
Renee Madison: It was a long time ago. I met him at this place called Moke's. We... became friends. He told me about a job ...
Fred Madison: What job?
Renee Madison: Ah... I don't remember. Anyway, Andy's okay.
Fred Madison: Yeah well, he's got some fucked-up friends.
(Dialog 3) I
returned home at night, Renee went to remove his makeup, Fred walked to a mirror in confusion, and slowly disappeared into the darkness. Renee entered the bedroom.
At dawn, Fred went to the door and took a new videotape. This time the content of the videotape turned out to be that Fred killed Renee and dismantled it. It was bloody.
As soon as the camera turned, Fred had arrived at the police station. He called me not to kill my wife, and the police punched him very annoyingly. Then the police told him that the jury had ruled that he was guilty of first-degree murder and that he was going to sit in an electric chair. That night, Fred’s head hurt. The prison guard heard his call for help and took a look. It was funny that the wife killer was not good, and the other said unkindly: Which one are you talking about? In his pain, Fred seemed to see a small wooden house rewinding back to its original shape after the explosion, and then saw a girl and a couple, and said to a young man: Pete don't go, don't go. . .
The third part started the
second day. The prison guards made a round of the room and found that Fred was missing. There was a young man named Pete in the prison. Everyone thought it was incredible, but there was no way. The innocent people had to let him go, and it was Pete's parents who came to pick him up, the couple Fred saw.
The police followed him all the way, trying to find out the truth.
Pete returned home, and his friends all came to look for him. The girl Fred saw before was his girlfriend Sheila. These pig friends and dog friends were playing in the bar. Sheila asked Pete, do you still care about me? ...The
next day, Pete went to work. He turned out to be a very good mechanic. His boss is very happy that he is back, many big customers are waiting for him, the most important one is Mr. Eddy, he is also waiting for Pete to come back. Soon, Eddy came, drove a good Benz, and brought a follower. It turned out that he was a gang boss. He let Pete sit in the passenger seat and drove the car for a while. Pete asked Eddy to stop the car. He opened the car and quickly twisted the screws. Then the noise of the car completely disappeared. Eddy praised Pete as the best mechanic in town and praised him for having "the best ears in town". On their drive, there was an episode. There was a car chasing Eddy's rear. When he let the car pass, the owner of the car pointed his middle finger to him, so Eddy madly knocked the other's car down. He drew out the gun and threatened and beat the car owner, saying that he hated others chasing the back of his car. Eddy is really a madman.
Pete’s very happy days have begun, and I am happy every night with my girlfriend. Eddy is here again. There is also a beautiful blonde woman in the car, Alice. Upon closer inspection, she looks exactly the same as Renee, except that Renee’s hair is black. She is Golden. Pete was attracted by her, and the blonde beauty came over to give her a hug at night. Pete's X ability is very strong, and he quickly fought with Alice. But Alice is Eddy's woman, Pete is still very worried that Eddy will find out and be against them.
After some time, Alice called Pete and told him Eddy should know that they should find a way to get out of here. Then revealed that she is a pornographic actress and she met a friend Andy in Moke (refer to Dialogue 3). Then Andy introduced Eddy to her, and she was forced to become Eddy's plaything. She planned that after Andy had a party in the evening, Pete sneaked into Andy's house, knocked him out, and took the money to go with him.
After Pete got home, his girlfriend showed up, accused him of fucking with her on his back, and left. The parents told Pete that the night he was in jail, Sheila, him, and another man went home together, but they didn't want to tell him what was wrong, they looked very sad. Pete vaguely remembered his parents and Sheila calling him not to go, he seemed to see a torn heart and blood.
Bill Dayton: The police called us today.
Pete Dayton: What did they want?
Bill Dayton: They wanted to know if we had a chance to find out what happened to you the other night. And they wanted to know if you remembered anything.
Pete Dayton: But I don't remember anything. What'd you tell them?
Bill Dayton: [after a long pause] We're not going to say anything about that night to the police.
Candace Dayton: We saw you that night, Pete.
Bill Dayton: You came home with your friend, Sheila.
Pete Dayton: Sheila?
Bill Dayton: Uh-huh. There was a man with you two.
Pete Dayton: What is this? Why didn't you tell me anything? Who was the man?
Bill Dayton: I've never seen him before in my life.
Pete Dayton: What happened to me? Please Dad, if you know, tell me.
[Bill and Candace sorrowfully look away from Pete]
(Dialogue 4)
Pete received a call from Eddy and warned him not to mess around. The mysterious person Fred met at Andy’s party also appeared next to Eddy, and he started that paragraph again.
Mr. Eddy: I'm really glad to know you're doin okay. You're *sure* you're okay ? Everything alright?
Pete Dayton: Yeah?
Mr. Eddy: I'm really glad to know you're doin good, Pete. Hey, I want you to talk to a friend of mine.
Mystery Man: We've met before, haven't we ?
Pete Dayton: I don't think so. Where is it you think we've met?
Mystery Man: At your house. Don't you remember?
Pete Dayton: No. No, I don't.
Mystery Man: In the East, the Far East, when a person is sentenced to death, they're sent to a place where they can't escape, never knowing when an executioner may step up behind them, and fire a bullet into the back of their head .
Pete Dayton: What's going on?
Mystery Man: It's been a pleasure talking to you.
(Dialogue 5)
At night, Pete went to Andy's house and found Alice's lewd Porn movie on the big screen in the living room. At this time Andy came downstairs to pour a drink, Pete took the opportunity to knock him unconscious, Alice walked down happily, and began to scrape Andy's valuables. Suddenly Andy woke up and rushed towards Pete. In the chaos, Andy knocked down on the table, stuck his head on the glass table and died. . . Pete found a picture frame on the table with Eddy and Andy inside, each of them holding a woman, a blond Alice, and a brunette Renee. Pete couldn't tell which was Alice, and Alice told him it was her with the blond hair.
At this time, a scene of a wooden house slowly recovering after the explosion also appeared in Pete's mind. Pete's nose suddenly bleeds. When Pete went to the second floor area to wash his face, he found room 26. He opened it and saw the black-haired alice (don't remember if it was black-haired) making out with people in it.
When they left Addy's house, Alice said that he knew someone who could help them sell the stolen goods. He lived in a hut in the desert. When they came to that room (the same cabin that Pete often replays in his mind) with no one in it, Alice and Pete became passionate again. . After the intimacy, the two of them had the following dialogue:
Pete Dayton: I want you.
Alice Wakefield: You'll never have me.
(Dialogue 6)
Then, Alice ran to the cabin, and Pete suddenly felt a headache.
The first 4part
at that moment, Pete became Fred.Fred went to the cabin, a mysterious man appeared, the only person inside the house
Fred Madison: Where's Alice?
Mystery Man: Alice who? Her name is Renee. If she's told you her name is Alice, she's lying.
[filled with rage]
Mystery Man: [shouts] And your name? What the fuck is your name?
Fred ran out, The mysterious man drove out with the video recorder. The effect of the video recorder was exactly the same as the video tape at Fred's door.
Fred drove to the Lost Highway Hotel. In room 26, Renee and Eddy were making each other. Fred arrived in room 25 and waited for Renee to leave. When Renee left, she called Eddy Dick. Fred broke into room 26, caught Dick to the back of the car, and drove to the desert cabin. When he opened the rear of the car, Dick rushed out. During the fight, the mysterious man gave the inferior Fred a knife, and Fred cut Dick's throat, and then the mysterious man showed the contents of the video recorder to Dick. It was all Dick's previous ones. The Porn movie was shot with him and Renee partying together, and then the mysterious man shot Dick and killed him with a headshot.
At dawn, the police came to Andy's house. During the investigation of the murder scene, they saw the photo of 4 people, but there were only 3 people on it, Dick, Renee and Andy. The police said: This is not Fred's. Wife? They found Pete's fingerprints everywhere in the room, and they thought it was no coincidence.
Fred drove the car, arrived at his door, rang the doorbell, and said: Dick Laurent is dead, just like at the beginning of the film. Fred suddenly saw two policemen coming back with him, and he drove away. He ran away on the highway, and many police cars followed him behind.
The story ends here. . . .
-----------------
We will discuss the plot after watching it.
I have never understood why the police still suspected Pete at the end. Pete should not be pure.
Tofu came up with an idea, and the last scene was also fake.
My reasoning suddenly became clear.
My understanding of the plot is
reality. In fact, the realistic part of the whole film is only a small piece of writing:
1. Fred can't satisfy his wife. That's why they made each other at first, Renee comforted Fred: It is fine
2. Renee has an affair. Because Fred is not working anymore, he suspects that Renee has an affair, and he calls home and no one answers. It was true in Lost Highway Room 26, Renee was cheating
3. Fred killed Dick, but he imagined it was a mysterious man's hand, not as he came to escape responsibility.
4. Fred hates Andy. Note that paragraph 3, he thinks Andy introduced Dick to Renee. So in the fantasy, I borrowed Pete's identity to kill him
5. My understanding of Pete is the opposite of his reality.
Pete is young, strong in sexual ability, and sensitive ears. The guest boss likes it. And Alice, who is Renee's clone, is also attracted by him.
Fred is old and can't satisfy Renee. His work should not go well, and the working environment is not good. He may have certain ear diseases.
6. Fred is unwilling to accept the fact that Renee has an affair. So he took out Renee's lustful side, Alice with the golden hair, a dangerous bad woman.
7. Fred has a certain mental problem, which should have been in his boyhood.
The picture of the parents in Fred’s mind in the prison. The girlfriend told him not to leave. Something happened that day. (Here is a guess based on the plot.) The girlfriend betrayed him and he brutally killed the man. , So Pete's often vaguely see the torn heart, body and blood. It is possible that he finally set fire to the house and destroyed the body. Both his parents and Sheila knew about it, and they both helped him hide it. But he himself lost the memory of this incident. Please see (Dialogue 4). There was a mental problem in his youth. This incident was the beginning. Therefore, the devil in his heart, the residence of the mysterious person is this cabin. The explosion and restoration of the cabin represents the birth and sleep of the devil in his heart. So when the old illness relapsed, the house was restored, and the mysterious person who represented the mental illness appeared.
Fred is unwilling to accept all this, so Pete abandoned his girlfriend in his fantasy world. In Fred’s fantasy, he constructed a good magical escape method for himself, transformed into Pete, and then used Pete to complete his imagination, making Alice like him and killing Andy retaliately. In the end, Fred did not commit any crimes. Evidence, all at the scene are Pete's fingerprints.
Imagine:
1. Renee was killed and divided
2. Someone secretly photographed
3. Eddy/Dick is the boss
4. Andy was killed
5. Pete
6. Mysterious people are
basically not what happened in reality, they are all his fantasies. So what he said is the key to the whole film: How I remembered them. Not necessarily the way they happened.
He tells the whole story in the way he feels it, but the whole story is not what it happened.
So there are few real incidents. Fred knew that his wife had an affair, so he went to the lost highway hotel, killed Dick, and then went home and told his wife as revenge. Was caught by the police. Then he was interrogated in the police station, was punched, and had a splitting headache at night. What happened after a night in prison after a headache is all imagined.
But the illness in his heart made him think he killed Renee, but in fact he didn't, so the prison guards used him to joke, saying that he was a wife killer. Because he was caught by a police car, he hated rear-end collisions.
It should be unwilling to accept the fact that he has to give the electric chair, imagine Pete and the mysterious man taking everything. Pete also represents a memory of his youth or youth.
The following is a brief and rational analysis of Tofu: The director interspersed fantasy and reality, and the time sequence was also disrupted.
1. The beginning of the real reality was when Alice told him: You'll never have me. Pete turned back to Fred, and then saw the mysterious person in the cabin. It started from his inner demon, which was the real beginning. He sensed Renee's derailment and used Alice's mouth to say that Renee's heart no longer belonged to him. He went to the hotel where Renee and Dick had an affair and killed Dick. When he returned home, he rang the doorbell and said: Dick Lorent is dead. He was caught by the police on the way to escape.
2. On the way to escape, he imagined that the person he killed was Renee. What happened next was the beginning of the film. He imagined that he and Renee received three cassettes of video tapes. Without knowing it, he killed him. His wife Renee. So in the police station, he thought Renee was murdered and he was suspected to be the murderer, so he strongly denied killing Renee. In fact, he was accused of killing Dick Lorent. As he was in his youth, he killed people, but he lost the memory of killing people. Here, after losing his memory, he also fantasizes about another episode of killing his wife to confuse the truth.
3. After being caught by the police, he was interrogated at the police station and was punched.
4. After spending a night in jail, he turned into pete until he killed Andy and went to a cabin in the desert.
