Common Story, Awkwardly Structured - Heartwarming

This is a very common fantasy story related to ''time': the family just had a second child, and the eldest suddenly had a younger sister, who became an older brother overnight. The "future" sister repeatedly rubbed and matched. After all kinds of hysterical roars, crying, and screaming, the brother met his future sister, his great-grandfather, his mother, and finally his grown-up self.

I can probably know the director's intention: from the birth of my sister, back to the past of this family, down to the future of this family. Those bloodlines are connected with real tenderness, and all frictions and contradictions will eventually be understood, and the family will finally usher in a happy future with a smile.

This theme cannot be said to be cliché. However, the mode of expression is too clumsy. The director simply divides a story into several segments—meet the dog, sister, mother, grandfather. This kind of small story is arranged in a series. There is no problem, the problem is the lack of a "story thread" that connects these little stories. These small stories that introduce the stories of family members are more of a series, rather than a progression or a foil, which directly leads to the extremely loose structure of the whole film and lacks a gripping tension.

After watching the movie, I have a lot of impressive scenes: my sister competes with the dolls, my brother's tears turn into countless tropical fish, my mother and my brother play pranks in the house, my grandfather is confident on a motorcycle, and the terrible horror in the subway station The announcer, the younger sister, held her brother's hand and fell in the air... The scene is beautiful, and the piano and the plot fit very well. I also know the director's idea: I want to express some sincere family affection from the daily trivialities. But I don't know if the time is limited, and the film ends hastily. It is always superficial and lacks the feeling of sublimation of a theme.

But I don't think this film can be turned into a bad film. At least I feel that the color tone is very comfortable after watching it. The green leaves and colorful tropical fish are very pleasing to the eye, and it is not a must for the mind.

Mirai quotes

  • Father: This is your baby sister, Kun.

    Kun: Sister?

    Mother: Isn't she precious?

Kun: [gasping in amazement] She is.

[pokes his finger against her delicate hand]

Mother: You have to be gentle with her.

Kun: [gently takes hold of the baby's hand; she opens her eyes]

Father: She's awake. I think she's staring at you, Kun.

Mother: Come on, her eyes can't even focus yet.

Father: Well she sure looks like she's staring to me.

Mother: You must always be nice to her, okay?

    Kun: Okay.

Mother: And you have to protect her no matter what.

    Kun: Yeah.

    Mother: Always.

  • Mirai: You did it again. You tried to hit me with your bullet train even after Mom told you not to.

Kun: But it wasn't a bullet train!

Mirai: You aren't supposed to use a bullet train to hit people.

Kun: It was a Super Azusa.

Mirai: [angrily] I don't care what kind it was!

    [scoffs]

Mirai: And why can't you be a little nicer to Mom?

    Kun: I don't know, I just can't.

Mirai: It's her one day off from work. She doesn't get many and she has to spend it fighting with you. Come on, try.

Kun: [sniffling] I know... I'm not cute.

    Mirai: Huh?

Kun: [crying, wipes tear from his eye] Both Baby Mirai and Yukio are really cute. Not me. I know I'm not that cute anymore.

    [continues sobbing]

Mirai: Oh come on, that's not true. You're very cute!

    Kun: [walking away]

    Mirai: You're the cutest! Adorable!

    Kun: [crying harder; runs away]
