Set in post-World War II America, the story spans two decades from rural southern Ohio to West Virginia, telling the stories of the people associated with this human-savage land .
The people here continue to intermarry and breed. Over time, many physical deformities or psychological deformities are born: Some people madly believe that God will give them divine power, and then stab their wife in the neck with a screwdriver, thinking that they can resurrect her. As a foreigner who grew up in this village, the male protagonist has been bullied by other children since he was a child. He is not religious, but under the influence of his father, he learned to rely on observation to find the right time to take action, and use violence to solve all problems.
The whole film is gothic and full of anti-religion, satirizing people's blind worship of faith and the deceitfulness of religion itself .
