Movies worth remembering

I watched this 2004 version of the Chinese director's work "Face" before, and I thought it was very relaxed and warm, that's all. Rewatching this movie recently, I feel that this movie has a deeper connotation, but when I watched it for the first time, I couldn't understand it.

Speaking of this movie, when I watched it for the first time, except for the familiar Shanghai dialect, I felt flat. On the contrary, after watching several works of similar Western film directors recently, I feel that this "Face" is indeed unique among similar films. It is really only through comparison that we can have the ability to distinguish the pros and cons, which is true.

When I rewatched this movie, I found that the first protagonist of this movie was my mother. I only noticed this detail when the subtitles appeared at the end of the movie. It turned out that Chen Chong's name was in the first place. It can be seen who is the real heroine of this film. In the final analysis, the most important thing is the mother's face, whether the mother protects her own face or the family's face, everything revolves around the mother, which is the key to the whole play.

This film is called "saving face" in English and "Face" in Chinese. I have been wondering why the saving is not translated in the Chinese name, and whether the verb is reserved, protected or preserved, or has another deep meaning? It is said that it is simply not translated directly when translating. This is something I didn't expect when I watched it for the first time.

When I watched it for the first time, I thought it was a movie with love as the main line. When I watched it for the second time, I realized that it was actually a movie with love as the core and family as the core. The focus of the whole drama is actually on the description Family affection, not family affection, if it is related, it is the help and resistance of family affection to love. Many of the scenes of love in the whole play complement each other with family, so we can see where the focus of this movie is.

The ending of the movie is actually quite intriguing. Among the similar movies I watched recently, "Unchangeable Heart" uses the same line of dialogue. What's more, in "De Lean Fried Rice", the next generation's birth design is simply incorporated into the movie. I think this is also the director's thinking about the future and many practical problems in real life. I think this is also a highlight of this film. The seemingly casual joke is actually an unavoidable problem whether it is in Eastern culture or Western culture.

Saving Face quotes

  • Wil: You don't have to talk so loud. And leave your shoes by the door.

  • Wil: So how come we never met before now?

Vivian Shing: We did meet. Nineteen years ago. I was 8, you were 9. Outside the temple.

    Wil: I don't remember.

Vivian Shing: The Wong boys were taunting me about my parents' divorce. You beat the crap out of them. You were wearing a Kristy McNichol t-shirt, tan cords and a pageboy. You spilled your mom's groceries. We scooped them into a bag.

    Wil: That's right, and then...

Vivian Shing: And then I kissed you on the nose. And you ran.
