Ivan's childhood

As a preliminary idea, translating Ta's film into text is purely for self-entertainment.

"Ivan's Childhood" Ivan was lying by the well, sucking the summer and sunshine. He fell down the well, his mother drifted away, and the smoke from the mill spread over the prairie. The old man, the dreamer, was pacing the ruins, he called to his wife and children, and he asked Ivan: "Are you going far?" His beard was like fish scales, "only the stove and the chimney." The cross, the sound of cannons fell in the quagmire. The children were slaughtered, and Ivan stood where he was. He saw again, the sister, the apple, the beach horse. The eternity and the moment in the birch forest are like a ray of light into the dark cave. And finally the war was won, and the soldiers ran to tell each other. Ivan opened his eyes and crossed the water.

Andrei Tarkovsky's debut novel. Although it is a war movie, the layout is small and there is no big scene. But in the use of photography and montage has become very good. The combination of virtual and real is superb, and several illusory and beautiful dreams are like the finishing touch, allowing the audience to have a deeper and more detailed excavation and understanding of the character of Ivan. Unforgettable and worth savoring.

"Ivan's Childhood" is indeed very poetic, and Tarkovsky's switching between dreams and reality is very accurate. The war is just a background symbol, and the inner struggle of the characters is the focus of the director's attention. However, I am not too fond of this "poetry movie" that blindly suppresses the plot, and would rather watch the long-shot close-up in "Little Soldier Zhang Ga". Scored 8.1.

Ivan's Childhood quotes

  • Ivan's Mother: If a well is really deep, you can see a star down there even in the middle of a sunny day.

  • Ivan: Is he a Fritz too?

Galtsev: He's either a German doctor or writer.

Ivan: They have no writers. I saw them burning books in a square. They poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. There was soot in the air for a week.

Galtsev: That writer lived 400 years ago.

    Ivan: Well, then maybe.
