It is not difficult to see that this is a thoroughly anti-religious and anti-Christian movie. The original English title of the film is "The Devil All The Time", which means that the devil is everywhere and God is nowhere to be found.
The devout Christians made the sky not work and the earth not working, causing their families to be destroyed, and the orphans left behind continue to repeat the mistakes of their fathers. The pastors who came and went were all sanctimonious. They were either lunatics who went into trouble, or perverts who pretended to be gods and did demonic deeds.
This is a multi-view cross-narrative group movie. The real protagonist is not Yawen, but the ubiquitous evil in the town.
Overall, A Forsaken Land is a serious and realistic crime thriller with dark elements. On the surface, the film clearly takes God and religion as the object of criticism, but in essence, the film is using anti-religious stories to expose and criticize the sins and greed of human nature.
It is not so much a "land forsaken by God" as it is a place of human sin, hatred, war and killing.
From the father who went to war to Yavin who killed with a gun, from Helen who was killed by the priest's husband to Lenora who was murdered by the priest, from the religious fanatic priest to the evil and perverted second-generation priest...
Whether it is innocent, pious, or people who are extremely sinful, they have not been able to escape the erosion and poisoning of sin. The dark setting of all villains shows that sin is an ignorant instinct that human beings can never get rid of.
However, the shortcomings of the film are equally prominent.
On the one hand, the narration covered in the whole process, like an official interpretation to "take care of the audience", not only seems redundant, but also destroys the video narrative.
On the other hand, the extremely long time span and intricate character relationships have weakened the dramatic tension to a certain extent, so that most of the time the film is like a loose and protracted TV series.
Because of this, the film has many intriguing advantages in terms of storytelling and thematic expression. The interlocking and intertwined multi-line narrative is reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men; the piercing satire of Christianity can also be seen in the shadow of "There Will Be Blood".
Fortunately, the acting skills of several protagonists added a lot of points to the film. The most eye-catching performance is the "new Batman" Robert Pattinson, who has been frequently brushing his face recently. His expression and demeanor, as well as the strange tone of voice that deliberately hoisted his voice, portrayed this perverted priest with a human face and a beast heart.
The Dutch brother, who played the most roles, also completed the task well. There is not much room for his character to develop his character, but he is very precise in his emotional level from the timid and cowardly at the beginning, to the restraint and forbearance in the middle stage, and finally to the explosion at the end. Yawen in the film has no trace of Spider-Man at all.
