"The New Mutants" is still several "Wolverines" away from "First Class"

The following is a non-spoiler talk, discuss it with friends who have seen it, and recommend it to friends who haven't watched it yet.

【Movie introduction】

The "X-Men" series finally restarted the series "First War", "Reversing the Future" and "Apocalypse" until "Dark Phoenix" broke down, and began to downgrade the youth market, and came up with this low-age "New Variant" people". From the beginning of the role setting, I went back to high school students aged 13-16, and the timeline is parallel with the X-Men. In the world of the movie, everyone knows "mutants" and "X-Men", as well as "X Academy" . It's just that the five characters in the story were isolated in a "hospital", "guarded" and "treated".

"The New Mutants" brings together the most promising young actresses, Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy. What's interesting is the actress: Anya Taylor-Joy has also appeared in "Splinter" and "Mr. Glass" in "Shyamalan Universe" before. The plot setting reminds people of "Mr. Glass" at first, but the psychological thriller is still Before it starts, the plot begins to collapse. The director is 79's Josh Boone, who directed the 2014 fire teen film "The Fault in the Stars."

Fox invited Josh Boone to do the job this time, and it should be for a movie that teenagers like to see and hear, and there are too many co-writers for this movie. It’s time to catch up with the previous “July and An Sheng” in China. ", plus the director himself, there are a total of seven screenwriters, most of whom have participated in the screenwriting of the X-Men reboot series, such as "Deadpool 2" and "Dark Phoenix", etc., they all feel like the ones that hit the street. .

【Video Talk】

Audiences familiar with the X-Men series must know the hidden position behind the "mutants" setting to speak for the LGBT community. This time the age is downgraded to high school students, and the same-sex plot is indeed more straightforward. The relationship between the two female characters is laid out at the beginning, and at the end of the kiss scene, the old metaphors are really explained. So the defect is also obvious, not enough power.

Together with the Lily plot, the rivalry of the two boys is better than the one without basic love, which makes the audience feel lustful for a while. Fortunately, the director stopped in time, and did not come up with the line of "a pair of lilies and a pair of bases, leaving one audience to love" (this famous saying comes from group friend Di). This kind of multi-character story is the most difficult to balance the scenes. Each character needs to establish a connection with the audience and tell the past experience. Just look at "Suicide Squad" to know what the counterexample is.

Personally, I think that the seven screenwriters did not have any blind skills. They used the abilities of the core mutants to solve this matter beautifully. It triggers the memories of different characters in stages, creating a crisis for the film every time, paving the way to the final battle, accumulating layer by layer , which is an efficient solution in terms of playwriting techniques and reasonable plot.

It's just that the memories of the five people are mixed with too many things to talk about. It can be seen that the team wants to take the opportunity to map all the social topics of the past decade, including but not limited to aboriginal people, religious scandals, child abuse and sexual assault. etc. And how the five characters can break through the shackles of brainwashing, system, and discipline, and cross the shadow of their childhood, has become the main storyline of the film.

The film begins with the legend of the aborigines, and uses "growth" to crack this legend and ends. But the whole movie is too much like a high school graduation ceremony, especially when the party is held in the middle, these children are really in no hurry to escape. Fortunately, Maisie and Anya have always maintained their acting skills above the standard line. The last "Friendship Defense" also released the energy of the X-Men series as always, and the audience was eaten to death. The role of Anya is quite established, which makes the audience, both men and women, want to marry her.

In fact, in the X-Men series, it seems that the story of the characters is always childhood tragedy + self-awakening + friend support + fighting together. No matter how the "New Mutants" or "X-Men" series restarts, it is still worth watching, because the core of this series is very unique. Take "Reunion" as a comparison, the enemy that the X-Men confronts is often themselves, and the purpose of the battle is often to rescue their companions and protect each other. What motivates the ability is always self-awareness and the desire to protect one's companions. Even in the admittedly ugly "Dark Phoenix", you will still be moved by Professor X's emotion of protecting Qin.

The "self-destruction" tendency is actually the dark side of everyone's heart, and the mutants make this tendency more intense because of their abilities, so they need the understanding and help of friends and family more. Just like everyone is fragile, everyone's strengths together can be indestructible. I suddenly felt that this film should be directed by Shyamalan, but unfortunately his superhero universe is another superpower issue in a more realistic context.

"The New Mutants" is indeed in line with the hearts of teenagers, who are rebellious and restless. They are looking for their own form and establishing themselves, from seeking protection from their families and social acceptance to self-recognition and learning to protect themselves. It's also how the X-Men franchise has inspired a tremendous amount of energy from minorities and marginalized groups. Are we the enemy of the world, or do we protect our fellows first.

Everyone will have different choices, or have different choices at different times. Just like Professor X and Magneto have been on opposite sides all their lives, but at the moment of life and death, they will also join forces, never targeting each other. This is also the surprise brought to us by "First War" and "Reversing the Future", and the brutal history of Wolverine and Magneto, Nazis and World War II, etc., are also the source of the power of the story and characters.

In the eyes of old X-Men fans, the characters and stories of "The New Mutants" are limited in depth and intensity. It can also be felt from the poster that the film strives for a non-mainstream attitude, but unfortunately it is not "wild" enough, and only stays on "non-mainstream". I believe that a large number of old fans will feel that after watching "The New Mutants", it may be better to go home and restart the series a few times!

Finally, I recommend everyone to watch it at half price on Tuesday, hoping that the mutant series can continue to be non-mainstream.

The above is just my personal opinion, welcome to leave a message for discussion.
