Gothic horror film that didn't follow through

Looking at Scarlet Peak, one cannot help but reminiscent of Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" (The Fall of the House of Usher). Scarlet Peak is essentially a Gothic horror novel, which contains several elements of Gothic legendary fiction: crumbling old houses, doom, death, decadence, family secrets, and hidden crimes.

Many people say that the plot of this movie is old-fashioned, but in fact, if you want to include most of the elements in a Gothic horror story, it is difficult to not be old-fashioned (because it itself is a story that has been written for hundreds of years. Literature category). But Scarlet Peak’s understanding of Gothic horror at least in the first half is quite adequate: a

pure heroine, a mysterious Byronian tragic male protagonist, a sister who is entangled with the tragic male protagonist, and the sunshine of a pure female protagonist. Jianqi admirer. The tragedy that the heroine suddenly encountered, the heroine was trapped in a run-down villa full of evil atmosphere and various secrets. The decadent atmosphere in the villa, the missing roof, the falling snow against the blue background, the red land, and the moths flying around, the whole movie is quite successful in shaping the atmosphere.

It is also said that the ghosts inside have no effect at all. In fact, very few ghosts in Gothic horror stories really do. They usually float around to create an atmosphere, instead of crawling out of the TV to kill people like Sadako in modern horror stories. The final mystery of the Gothic horror story is almost all crimes committed by living people. The ghosts in the abandoned house are not so much a "supernatural phenomenon" as a concrete manifestation of a covered crime. Therefore, "The ghost is your past" repeatedly in Scarlet Mountain is actually a very good understanding of Gothic symbolism.

In fact, according to the style of Usher House and Allan Poe or Lovecraft, the heroine should have finally discovered the secrets of the Sharp brothers and sisters, discovered the hidden bodies, and finally managed to escape from the villa, watching the villa and the brothers and sisters were buried in the sea of flames. This is the real implementation of Gothic horror. Whether it is Lovecraft, Mary Shelley or Poe, their protagonists are generally not particularly strong people. They are often bystanders involved in mysterious events by innocents, and they are not even the protagonists of crimes or secrets. Using the House of Usher as an example again, the narrator of the story is a friend of the true protagonist. His coming to House of Usher is not so much a part of the storyline as an observer. The House of Usher is a symbol of the Usher family. Any narrator will be overthrown by the crimes of Roderick and Madeleine.

Gothic horror stories generally do not have such plots as justice. Most of them are very good if the final protagonist can survive (for example, Frankenstein died of illness at the end, and Dr. Avatar finally committed suicide). Many Gothic horror novels have tragic endings.

Therefore, the problem with Scarlet Mountain is not that his plot is routine, but that he has not implemented the routine to the end, and the movie has become nondescript from the second half. Especially in the final duel between the two heroines, it was simply superfluous. I really don't know which bottle of medicine the director took wrong and wrote such a shit ending.

In any case, the clothes are beautifully made. The creation of environmental atmosphere (in the first 3/4) is still very sensible. Tang Dousen is of course beautiful. . . But the end is the mouse shit that broke this pot of soup.

The costumes and scenes are commendable. (In fact, most of the indoor scenes are inspired by hand-painted books from the world. The costumes are basically based on the 19th century clothing styles, but they are in line with the time setting. The details have borrowed many elements of the Renaissance clothing.) The story is just that. It was a thin mess, and the final chase scene was almost a laugh. A very expensive but not so brainy movie.

There is a small foreshadowing buried in front of "there are ghosts in the story, but it is not a ghost story". The plot is pretty simple. The ambience is amazing, keeping the Jane Eyre, Rebecca tradition. Costume set what deserves to be nominated everywhere. Makeup especially, it's amazing to be able to transform Jessica Chastin into Eva Green.

Edith Cushing: Oh it's... it's not. It's more a story with a ghost in it. The ghost is just a metaphor.
