The gay subject matter is presented in a way that is authentic and thought provoking, but at the same time not overly didactic. Very charming, yet entertaining. Although it involves big social issues, the core is the love of a mother for her son, which Nicole Kidman shows with ease. Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe, and especially Nicole Kidman did a great job. Lucas Hedges gave a quiet but powerful performance. As director, Joel Edgerton manages the pacing of the film very well, in which the plot of Gerard Emmons from therapy to having an understanding of his own gender is used in flashbacks, and it is handled properly. It's a good film, presents tough issues in a respectful way, and the cast is top-notch.
