The Ozark region in northwest Missouri in the United States is a remote and sparsely populated agricultural community. The early immigrants and rooted here are a group of Italians who still retain many traditions of the patriarchal society. They have a high degree of loyalty to people of the same surname, even more than respect for law and justice, just like a clan society.

The beginning of the story is very simple. In this impoverished remote village, the father of a 17-year-old girl (Ree) was killed. And her father, who had a detrimental deeds during his lifetime, was repeatedly targeted by the police for making drugs. Her mother was insane because she couldn't stand the blow. Ree raised her siblings alone and struggled to maintain the family's livelihood. But this time, because her father absconded for months and did not return, the old house where their family lived was about to be taken away by the court as collateral for bail.

So Rui had to embark on a journey to find his father alone. Only in this way can we avoid being driven out of our homes by courts and bail companies and living on the streets.

The Ozark area is a rural area lacking in materials, where, in order to make a living, drug production has become the default way of making money. And retrieving his father would inevitably mean more trouble for the people in this area, that is, Ree's distant relatives.
There are no brave sheriffs here, no justice lawyers here, and some are just cold and tangible reality-if you want to eat, then you can only let the golden rule of "cannot break the law (drug trafficking)" Eat shit.

What Ree suffered was the cold-eyed and fistful treatment of distant relatives, and even his life was not guaranteed. A weak woman has no father's broad back to lean on, and no mother's ardent care can help. Those who can rely on have only their legs firmly standing on this land and the determination to survive tenaciously. When surrounded by suffering, Ree did not shrink or flinch. Faced with the danger of life, she was not weak either. She just asked, "You want to kill me?"

At the end of the story, Ree found his father's body in a stagnant water and saw it. He took off one of his father's hands. This hand, as evidence in court, is sufficient to invalidate the mortgage and preserve the family's hopes.

【2 my brother】
The loss of your father, your mother is not a normal person, and your family is poor, none of these are the direct reasons that brought you down. Only a complete loss of confidence in life can bring you down.
You know, everything in this world will collapse, but there are only people whose determination can be irresistible and become more tenacious.
There are one hundred and ten thousand ways to live, and those who face reality and difficulties and never give up will be respected by others.
So, let us put the hardships and grievances we have suffered in the deepest part of our hearts.
Don't care about the bad opinions of those who are shallow. Adhere to the true self, and uphold a pure heart.
Cheer up my brother,
live in the sunshine.
We'll understand it all,
by and by.

Ree: Did you tell him I'd spring for gas?

Gail: I told him. He still won't.

    Ree: Why not?

Gail: He never says why not to me, Ree, he just says no.

Ree: Man, it's so sad to hear you say he won't let you do somethin' and then you *don't* do it.

Gail: It's different once you're married.

Ree: It really must be. 'Cause you ain't never used to eat no shit.

  • Ree: He might be hangin' around with Little Arthur and them. You think?

Teardrop: You don't wanna go around Little Arthur's askin' them people about anything they ain't offered to talk about. That's a real good way to end up et by hogs... or wishin' you was.
