"The Devil in the Elevator": Art and Forgiveness

The so-called demons and gods are only separated by a mirror. They are two mirror images of the inside and outside of the mirror, and the position of the two is determined by the attributes of good and evil reflected in this mirror. What is the reason for this attribute of the mirror? The answer is human nature. In this movie, the devil uses the elevator as a carrier to show a cruel and weird performance art of punishment, whose purpose is to warn the ugly human beings—bad things happen for a reason. And in the end, with the unintentional error interpretation, human nature quietly changes in the process of seeking forgiveness and being forgiven, and the attributes of the mirror are also reversed. Therefore, as soon as the demon is kind, God appears, just as the last narration of the film says. ——If the devil really exists, then God must also exist.

This film has a strong religious color, which can be seen from the two posters of the film. Of course, because of the existence of the "Sixth Sense of Supernatural" Shamaran, this situation seems to be beyond reproach. On the poster, the commandments of karma and the downward cross are quite in line with the performance art of punishment by the devil. As the opposite of God, the devil seems to like to enjoy religious ritual artistic techniques, and to a certain extent interprets this kind of art more thoroughly and cruelly. There is no doubt that this movie is proof. From a certain point of view, this movie is more like a demon under the banner of God, acting for religion, in an artist-like disciplinary posture. But obviously, the original intention of the devil is not to allow the ugly humanity to be forgiven, but to expose humanity more depravedly in a small claustrophobic space, and eventually sink into the abyss of death. This should be the fun and art of the devil.

Contrasting with the devil's punishment performance art is the story structure of this movie. From the subtitles narration at the beginning of the film to the voice narrations that continue to appear afterwards, the expansion of each episode of the film is connected with these narrations, and the number is checked. And these narrations together are a short story of religious superstition. The story is explained by the story, and the story is confirmed by the story. Finally, the themes of the two stories are unified. This nested narrative structure is very wonderful, in my opinion, very artistic. In addition, the film started with an inverted world lens. Although it gives people a very depressing feeling, it is quite interesting. As stated in the preface of this article, demons are the opposite mirror image of God. When the attributes of the mirror are evil, demons will appear. In this way, this approach is quite a finishing touch. Moreover, for those who are about to participate in demon art, their world has been turned upside down, like two realms of black and white. As for how to go from black to white, this is the journey of forgiveness.

Many people are very disdainful of the film being put on a coat of religious superstition. Because in such a good situation based on the story in the first half of the film, in the end a real demon actually comes, and then it ends with a false preaching. I don’t think so. The theme of the film is after all about humanity and forgiveness, not a case investigation. In a sense, the meticulous investigation in the first half is like a cover to cover people's eyes and ears. While the devil is engaged in the art of punishment, it is also the process of ugly humanity seeking forgiveness, but in the small space of the elevator, before death, no one really seeks. Because they can't see clearly. In the end, the demon's explanation made the lost path of forgiveness open. In this way, it is this religious behavior of the devil that has achieved human forgiveness. And this religious meaning is exactly the breakthrough point for the transformation of the bounded human nature, or the search under a certain belief. Perhaps this is the real art of "demons".

Devil quotes

  • [last lines]

Ramirez: [voiceover] After my mother would finish her story, she would always comfort us. "Don't worry," she'd say. "If the Devil is real, then God must be real, too."

  • [first lines]

Ramirez: [voiceover] When I was a child, my mother would tell me a story about how the Devil roams the Earth. Sometimes, she said, he would take human form so he could punish the damned on Earth before claiming their souls. The ones he chose would be gathered together and tortured as he hid amongst them, pretending to be one of them. I always believed my mother was telling me an old wives' tale.
