Season of the Witch is the kind of movie with high eyes and low hands. It clearly has a good idea, but it actually doesn't make sense at all.
The investment encyclopedia for the film says that there is 40 million dollars. Your film is 11 years old, and this budget is actually not too small. You can see that the money is basically spent in the beginning and the end - the first few war clips, the boss battle at the end, as far as the visual effects are concerned, it's okay.
But the middle part is the biggest flaw in the film.
A 6-day journey, 400 leagues, ended up in two plays. One chase in a rotten village, and one in the woods.
That wood was called Absinthe, and it started out mysteriously, but it turned out to be nothing but a bunch of fog and a bunch of wolves.
This has caused the most serious problem. There are too few characters, the characters are masked, and the emotional foreshadowing and release points are not enough. The knights and liars are very casual. Just like the part of crossing the bridge is neither thrilling nor exciting, the emotions are like a pool of stagnant water, so is the plot in the middle.
The emotional foreshadowing of the characters in the early and mid-term is insufficient, and the release of the ending is naturally implicated by it.
The only bright spot is the confrontation between Cage and the priest, which will be discussed later.
I prefer the theme of the film, the Middle Ages, the church, Weiguang's ugliness on the front, self-redemption. "The church has sent more souls to hell than wars, famines, and plagues combined."
There are actually two kinds of people in the film - believers who believe in the true God and stick to justice, such as priests; false believers who use the name of God to satisfy their selfish desires, such as the so-called "Messenger of God" who led the Crusades.
Both Cage and Pullman belonged to true believers, but were used by false believers and left angrily after learning the truth. So later, he said "I will not serve the church again" because in his eyes, the church = a group of false believers.
In the scene where Cage loses control of his emotions and wants to kill the witch (demon), we can see that the priest is an upright person, always believing in God, and trying to awaken Cage's insistence on faith, but Cage has been deceived by false believers He had cheated too much, and at this moment he was unwilling to follow the church's orders.
This scene originally focused on the description of the characters, but the result was only a passing, which was very disappointing.
If the film could have more investment and the director's level was higher, the whole film might have been shot better.
The length of the movie has increased, the plot descriptions of several characters have increased, and the scenes have increased. Although it is a cliché story of redemption, it should at least reach the passing level of 6 points. If the main emotional scenes of the characters can be filmed well, in-depth, and the theme is also in-depth, to create the feeling that in the dark Middle Ages, there are still people who insist on justice and light, maybe it will be able to shoot a 7-point effect.
It's a pity that it's just a bad film with an interesting idea but nowhere to focus.
