Submarine is Alex Turner's debut solo EP. It was released in the UK on 18 March 2011 by Domino Records. The EP contains six original songs written by Alex Turner for the film Submarine. Submarine is Richard Ayoade's directorial debut, based on author Joe Dunthorne's 2008 novel of the same name.
Submarine becomes a metaphor in the film, and the actor Oliver sees in the encyclopedia that ultrasound is used on submarines to determine location. Humans cannot hear ultrasound. But on the poster, Oliver thinks of himself as a submarine trying to detect the ultrasonic waves emitted by things around him.
The film is a tender, fanciful adolescent comedy about the coming-of-age of a fifteen-year-old boy named Oliver Tate. From Oliver's first point of view, the director recorded the process of getting along with his girlfriend, as well as the slightly immature but real psychological feelings when he was caught in the broken marriage of his parents.
There are five songs in total on Alex's album, including: "Stuck on the Puzzle", "Hiding
Tonight", "Glass in the Park", "It's Hard to Get Around the Wind" and "Piledriver Waltz". In the film, these songs appear in fragments under different plots, interpreted from the perspective of the beholder From Oliver's point of view, the lyrics also become supplemental narration for the scene.
1. Stuck on the Puzzle
I was standing in the middle of the fog, trying to find my way home, but I couldn't take a step, because it seemed that no matter how I went, it was wrong.
If there are some songs in this world that you will fall in love with after listening to the prelude for three seconds, this one must be one of them.
"I'm not the kind of fool
Who's gonna sit and sing to you About stars, girl
But last night I looked up into The dark half of the blue And they'd gone backwards"
2. HidingTonight [to hide tonight]
We will miss, we will make mistakes, but there will always be a tomorrow, and tomorrow will be better.
We set off fireworks by the sea, ran, hugged, kissed, whispered in each other's ears, and laughed happily. Every second with you is happy, I really want to hold the whole world in front of you, and tell you everything about me.
But in the end I just put all the emotion in the lyrics, shove it into your hand, and say "Just nothing, just take it."
"And I will play the coconut shy
And win a prize even if it's rigged I won't know when to stop And you can leave off my lid, and I won't even lose my fizz I'll be the polka dots type I'll know the way back, if you know the way But if you are, I am quite alright, hiding today”
3. Glass in the Park【Glass in the Park】
Accidents in life, the pain of accidental loss, I wish I could share with you
So I use this song to tell you: it's okay
"There's glass in the park Darling, I can't help but keep making appointments To sweep beneath the climbing frame
If the sun's in your eyes, I'll tighten your blindfold, baby Don't worry your foot won't get cut Strut carelessly"
4. It's Hard to Get Around the Wind
I want to escape from this place full of memories, but memories are like the wind around me, no matter what
Simple guitar accompaniment and deep singing are the deepest thoughts of teenagers
“Looking for a new place to begin,
Feeling like it's hard to understand, But as long as you still keep peppering the pill, You'll find a way to spit it out again.
And even when you know the way it's gonna blow, It's hard to get around the wind."
5. Piledriver Waltz [Hercules Waltz]
I was wrong and I'm sorry I can be timid, can be timid, can be self-centered
But I want your forgiveness in the days to come
No matter what happens, I will choose to advance and retreat with you
The lyrics of this song are the most confusing, just like people who are in love chatting away
”I etched a face of a stopwatch
On the back of a raindrop And did a swap for the sand in an hourglass
I heard an unhappy ending It sort of sounds like you leaving I heard the piledriver waltz"
At the beginning of the video, the teacher arranged "What Kind of Young Person Am I", an essay on the theme of self-cognition exploration. Oliver's way of finding yourself is to separate yourself from your surroundings. He hopes that his life can be like a soap opera, so that when a crisis arises, he can choose to close the channel and save too dramatic episodes to watch when he is in the mood.
So most of the time, he regards himself as the protagonist or even the director, hoping to change the status quo that does not meet expectations by himself.
Oliver wasn't a child through and through, and he had a part of maturity and coolness that wasn't his age. But he is still only a child after all. He doesn't know yet that the ultimate answer to finding himself is to pull himself down from the position of the protagonist and become an ordinary person.
