"Blood Five": Restore the cruelty of war with a treasure hunt adventure

Even without the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement currently in full swing in the United States, Spike Lee's "Blood Five" deserves the attention of awards season. It is not only an anti-war, racist film, but also a very deep exploration of human nature, and satirizes current American politics with history, but also through an interesting, bloody, and accidental survival adventure story.

Spike Lee's films generally have four characteristics: 1) they must be very political-political 2) they must be very ironic and humorous 3) the characters have more words 4) the music is very well chosen. This is basically his own characteristics, and this film is also very prominent in these four points. The first more than an hour of "The Five Bloods" was a little boring, making it feel like another anti-war work about the aftermath of the war for veterans, but starting from 1 hour and 20 minutes, it became an adventure action As if watching an Indiana Jones type of Jedi treasure hunt movie, the audience starts to guess who will live to the end.

However, all kinds of irony and irony about history and reality are still contained in interesting stories, especially the last five minutes, as if they were re-shot recently because of the resurgence of BLM activities, and they are closely connected with reality. This is the best movie to watch right now.

The story follows four African-American veterans in their 60s who return to Vietnam to find the remains and buried treasure of their dead captain (Chadwick Boseman). However, when the treasure is found, the dark side of human nature is exposed, and the friendship of several people is challenged. At the same time, in this jungle where war once took place, there are still mines, organs, local gangsters and poisonous snakes, all kinds of accidents follow. It also made the film more interesting, as if it had returned to the battlefield where life and death were unpredictable, which whetted the audience's appetite.

What's more interesting is that one of the four veterans is a supporter of Lao Chuan, wearing the little red riding hood that says "Make America Great Again". And this hat is also passed on by many characters in the film, and the political meaning is self-evident. In Spike Lee's film, wearing this little red riding hood obviously doesn't mean good luck.

The dead captain played by "Brother Leopard" is the only young one among the five, and only appears in the memories of the other four. When the director showed the memory passage, he did not replace the other four with young people, but still let the four old people appear in the Vietnam War. Then distinguish the younger version of the actor. Most of the flashbacks just show that the captain was a good man and the spiritual support of the remaining four for many years, even after death, he still has a huge influence on them.

The most interesting thing is that most war-related movies, bloody scenes are used in the memory of war, and this film is to continue the bloody and cruelty like in war to this day, through a treasure hunt adventure in the original battlefield. Restore the cruelty of war.

Compared to the various previous films about veterans, this film is absolutely unconventional, not boring, and at the same time, it will trigger people's thinking about war, the status of African Americans in the United States, and human nature. The acting is also quite good, especially Delroy Lindo, who plays the veteran of the old Sichuan supporter, has many opportunities to show his good acting skills.

The only problem was that the first hour dragged a bit, making the entire movie 2 and a half hours long. Although I haven't seen too many movies this year, this one is by far the best.

Da 5 Bloods quotes

  • Hanoi Hannah: In Memphis, Tennessee, a White Man assassinated Dr. Martin Luther King who heroically opposed the cruel racial discrimination in the USA. Dr. King also opposed the US War in Vietnam. Your government sent six hundred thousand troops to crush the rebellion. Your soul sisters and soul brothers are enraged in over one hundred and twenty-two cities. They kill them while you fight against us so far away from where you are needed. The South Vietnamese people are resolute against these fascist acts against Negroes who struggle for civil rights and freedom. Negroes are only 11 percent of the US Population but among troops here in Vietnam you are thirty-two percent. Is it fair you serve more than the white Americans that sent you here! Nothing is more confused than to be ordered into a war to die or to be maimed for life without the faintest idea of what's going on. I dedicate brother Marvin Gaye'"What's Going On" to the soul brothers of the 1st Infantry Division. Big Red One, 2nd Battalion 136th Regiment.
