love remains

Visiting the Grand Palace today reminded me of this movie I watched as a teenager, the story of Anna and the King, a governess from England and the King of Siam.

At the end of the film, the Siam Palace, the teaching task is over, and Anna is leaving. She and her son are going back to England. One night before her departure, she met the king with a music box in hand.

"Essentially... music is also a mathematical concept..." Tears had slipped from her eyes. The king looked at her with sadness.

"...Since science can reveal the mysteries of something as wonderful as music...why can't it be calculated for the tutor and the king?" Anna said, her eyes full of doubts, full of unwillingness, full of tears .

"You know... in Siam, everything has to be taken slowly..." the king said softly, "even if the king is anxious, there is no way..."

The waltz sounded, they embraced and danced...

Maybe leaving is the right choice. Leaving it may only add to regret. But I know they will never be alone again. Love will always stay in my heart.

Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat are both actors I like. I don't know why they are together, but they are warm and without sparks. Maybe it has something to do with the film's too literary style.

A well-crafted faux pas, the concubine virtues of an English woman, with a little love spice. Anyone who knows a little about imperial society will immediately see countless flaws. Endure the jump and watch it.

Anna and the King quotes

  • Tuptim: [speaks in English] He wrote to me, to bid me farewell. Believing that I was lost forever on the inside! To commit his life in monastery...

Third Judge: [interrupts her, in Thai] You will speak in your native tongue!

  • Anna Leonowens: My mind has taken me down many roads of late. All of which lead absolutely nowhere. What would Buddha say of that?

King Mongkut: That roads are for journeys, ma'am, not destinations.
