A masterpiece that may be misunderstood (1)

Originally called "The Turning". I don't know why it was translated as Tightening. In my opinion, this film is a completely different story except for borrowing the name and a little frame of the original book "The Screw Is Tightening". A more appropriate translation of Turning should be turning or reincarnation.

This film has a lot of intriguing details. After all, it is a luxurious lineup of Universal + DreamWorks + Spielberg. Let me analyze them one by one.

The opening scene is that the former female teacher, Jessel, escaped from the house, injured her left eye, and ran away by car. The girl Flora witnessed everything and was finally stopped by a man at the gate. (Ms. J in the mirror at 1 hour, 13 minutes and 10 seconds had an injury to her left eye, and Miss J, who was strangled to death at 1 hour, 21 minutes and 24 seconds, had no injury to her left eye. The grandmother doll and the broken doll were all left eyes.)

After that, there is a close-up of the left eye, the title of the film appears, and I can see the panic in the eyes of the left eye. (This is a turning and the beginning of reincarnation.)

2 minutes 16 seconds TV is broadcasting news, a musician committed suicide two days ago, the musician on the news also appeared on the poster on the boy's miles wall. (It is only in dreams that the same people and things appear in different places.)

3 minutes 04 seconds The clock on the refrigerator is 11:20 (all the clocks in this film are between 11:20 and 11:30.)

At 3 minutes and 19 seconds, there were three envelopes on the ground, one new and two old, from mother Darla to the hostess.

At 3 minutes and 50 seconds, the heroine listened to music and went to say goodbye to her mother. (The music in the earphones is called "I don't know" you're a virtual vast love you are like an ethereal love your shadow follow us Me inside and ourside Oh both had to love Is it all in my head? Is it all in your mind? I don't know I don't know. It's about placing clues in the music, and the lyrics suggest that everything is imaginary.)

At 5 minutes and 05 seconds, the heroine was picking her fingers when she saw her mother, and she would do it later when she knew she was nervous and scared. (What she is afraid of is not the mother, but the truth, which is what the mother really represents.) The mother gave the heroine a painting, the only one with color, saying that it can keep you warm, and the woman on the painting The main left and right faces are different colors. (The heroine is dressed in warm sunshine throughout the first half of the film.) The last black-and-white painting by the mother is three circles overlapping each other. (People and things in dreams are always confusing and overlapping.)

At 6 minutes and 30 seconds, the heroine came to the manor, and there was a sign on the gate. (If it is the abbreviation of "TB", it is presumed to mean Turning back.) Most of the plants in the manor are dry, with only a few green. (The spiritual world is withering and dying.) The heroine said to herself "this can't be real." (It can be understood as the heroine's sigh, and it is also a hint of a pun.)

At 8 minutes and 34 seconds, there was a doll on the flower pond in the flower room, its face was covered with a blood-red cloth, and the heads of three blond dolls were placed beside the pond, and their bodies were fragmented in the pool. (An important symbolic shot. The doll whose face is covered has red hair, the mother Darla and the little girl Flora have red hair. The blonde has the heroine, the former tutor Miss J, and the old nanny used to have blonde hair, it seems that they Both helpers and victims.)

P.S. There are statues of winged dogs all over the manor, with their paws pressed against a sign with three different bird patterns. (Statue of the sphinx, the riddle of the sphinx why things have four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs at night, the answer is people. The Greek word for sphinx also means taut and strangled. Speculation hints The heroine, Miss J, and the old nanny may be split from one personality.)

  • Kate Mandell: I'm going from twenty-five screaming kids to one little girl. How hard can it be?

  • Mrs. Grose: Flora leaves her dolls lying around everywhere. Don't be surprised if you find a mermaid in your toilet.
