Director’s Q&A. I wrote it all down. Some very technical issues are omitted. It is estimated that everyone is not interested.
1. Where does Locke come from?
The director spent a lot of time as a screenwriter before making this film. He said that when writing the script, every screen and every line can be vividly displayed in front of your eyes. But when the script is handed over to the director, it is the real beginning of all troubles. So after many years of screenwriting experience, he also had the idea of writing and directing himself. Lockean is taken from the British philosopher John Locke, who believes that all human behavior can be rationally resolved (I checked the wiki and thought it might have the following meaning: The Lockean self is therefore a self-aware and self-reflective consciousness that is fixed in a body.) And the director believes that life is not a rational individual like the Lockeists think, but is intertwined by many irresistible external forces. In the film, this view is shown in the occupation of Teacher Tang's role-a construction worker. Pouring cement is a controllable process, and the birth of a child is an uncontrollable but inevitable result. Inside the enclosed compartment is the area controlled by the protagonist, while the world outside the window is completely spontaneous and cannot be completely explained by logic.
2. Why did you choose Teacher Tang?
The director and the teacher met in the early years [Guiquan], the director originally showed the first draft of the script to the teacher only for the discussion of the drama. Unexpectedly, the teacher is very interested and willing to act. It makes sense.
3. How did the director get the filming party to agree to the shooting?
"Anyway, this film is too experimental, the film party actually agreed?"
"No, they don't care about such a low-cost film. I made a small amount of money in the previous film, and Mr. Tang agreed to perform it. It's a guarantee. They agreed to let me shoot."
[The director also said another thing, the higher the cost of the film, the lower the director's control. 】
4. How was this film shot?
The filming cycle of this film is only 5 days. Except for Teacher Tang, no one else was seen in the whole film. At the time of filming, the other five actors were all in a hotel. The phone calls in the film are real, not recorded. At night, the car was placed on a flatbed trailer, and three cameras were suspended in three positions on the car. The director sits on the trailer and directs. This film was shot on the roads of the UK. Every night I will drive in the direction of London at least twice. The whole process was almost done in one go, except for stopping to change the SD card and lens every 27 minutes. In this way, a total of 16 shots were taken, and the final film is a mix of 16 locke cuts. The scripts of the other actors were just placed in front of them and called on the phone. There was a reminder in front of Teacher Tang (outside the car), and the GPS on the car was actually a reminder. Because it was shot entirely on the road, many scenes are real. For example, the truck that says always been happy. As for the police cars that have appeared many times. It was because there was a police car escorted on the way. There are many times when police uncles overtake cars when they want to be in the mirror. The director felt that some of the effects were good and used them.
5. In the imagery of the mirror and GPS,
Locke has many conversations with the mirror. He was talking to his late father. Locke is an abandoned bastard. As mentioned earlier, the philosopher Locke believes that reason is the criterion of events. The illegitimate child is an obviously irrational product. Locke is a hardworking employee for a good father. He spent his whole life avoiding being an irresponsible person like his father. But the inadvertent teasing of fate made him fall into the same situation as his father back then. His conversation with the mirror is a conversation about the past, while the GPS on the car points to the future, and the car is driving the road in life. It is inevitable but must move forward.
6. Teacher Tang’s cold
is real. The teacher caught a cold that week ╮(╯▽╰)╭
7. Teacher Tang’s accent
was mentioned by the teacher himself. The teacher and the director said: “I know someone who is of Locke’s character and he has a Welsh accent. So I also want to use it. Welsh accent." But after the film was released, the Rock prototype was asked by reporters what he thought of the teacher's shaping, he said: "I am not Welsh." ╮(╯▽╰)╭
8. The choice of the protagonist
At the beginning of the film, Locke flashed a left turn signal at the intersection, and finally turned to the right. The director said that the difference between this film and other films is that the protagonist made a decision at the very beginning.
9. The continuity of the performance.
The director said that he once encouraged the actor who played Locke's wife to consider the possibility that his wife really wanted a divorce. It is said that immutability is the death of performance. (consistency is the heart of dull acting). But won't this cause great difficulty in editing? The director said that this makes it more natural. Human emotions themselves become unstable under such a big change. The emotional outburst is the most fascinating part of the drama.
10. How about Teacher Tang?
Let's not talk about all kinds of people. The director praised the teacher for acting like what, as long as the power is turned on, he can be fully involved in the role.
11. What will happen to Locke's life?
Maybe he will reconcile with his wife, who knows?

  • Ivan Locke: You make one mistake, Donal, one little fucking mistake, and the whole world comes crashing down around you.

  • Ivan Locke: Do it for the piece of sky we are stealing with our building. You do it for the air that will be displaced, and most of all, you do it for the fucking concrete. Because it is delicate as blood.
