The Professor and the Madman

Dr. James Murray (Mel Gibson) was invited by Oxford University Press to compile the Oxford English Dictionary. This is a huge project. It is impossible to collect and organize hundreds of thousands of words with the efforts of a few members of the editorial team. Dr. Murray, who came from a commoner, has pioneered the model of national participation, allowing all English speakers to work together. Collect term definitions and mail them to the editing team. Although there is support from the whole people, the compilation is still difficult. For more than 20 years, the editing team has received nearly 10,000 quotations from a doctor named Miner (Sean Penn)—a workload that has surpassed that of professional scholars. When the first volume of the dictionary was published, Dr. Murray came to thank him, only to find out that Dr. Miner was a military doctor during the American Civil War who was incarcerated in a mental hospital for manslaughter due to schizophrenia.

Standing on the spine of the book, leap over the wall in front of you; with the wings of words, reach the top of the world. The friendship and abnormal love hidden behind the compilation of the Oxford Dictionary. Although it is a dual male lead, it feels reversed, and Sean Penn’s story line clearly has more room for play. People who sit for decades and do the same thing always win my respect.

72/100 A vocal biographical film, a frontal attack on "political correctness". In addition to Dongmu, Mel Gibson is still a conservative general.

The Professor and the Madman quotes

  • Dr. William Chester Minor: It's freedom, Mrs. Merrett. I can fly out of this place on the backs of books. I've gone to the end of the world on the wings of words... . When I read, no one is after me. When I read, I am the one who is chasing--chasing after God.

  • Dr. William Chester Minor: Have you gotten to the "I's" by now? I had some to add to your words. But I can't seem to... I can't seem to find my pens.
