The Spartacus uprising, compared to the book of Exodus, can be called "Exodus of Rome": the insurgents just wanted to go back to their homeland, to their own home. Unfortunately, no miracle was given to them by God, and Spartacus was not the prophet Moses who separated the Red Sea. Finally, they died in Italy.

An uprising must have a slogan. There are various "peasant uprisings" and uprising slogans in Chinese history. For example, Chen Sheng and Wu Guangguang Zexiang uprising shouted that "the princes and generals are better than each other." The Spartacus Uprising also had its own slogan: Freedom. Spartacus was originally one of a group of "talking animals", a slave who served the Roman master as a meaningful existence, and a gladiator for the entertainment of the Roman aristocracy. But the Spartacus didn't want to please anyone by killing their fellow human beings, on the contrary, they wanted to destroy those who wanted to please them, they didn't want to live as slaves, they'd rather die free! All people will die and lose their lives; but slaves and free men lose not the same thing. "When a free man dies, what he loses is the joy of life; when a slave dies, what he loses is pain!"

There is no need to overly glorify Spartacus with an idealistic narrative. Spartacus pursues freedom, but also pursues survival, the pursuit of happiness in life, and the pursuit of an ordinary and happy family—and all these pursuits should not contradict. But Spartacus couldn't accept to live without freedom, so he couldn't accept the invitation of the Silesian pirates, abandon those who trusted him, and smuggle the ship to the east to live that rich and lingering life; Spartacus Nor can it be accepted that, like Marsellus, he killed other gladiators to please the Roman aristocracy, was "liberated" by his Roman masters as new gladiator trainers, and thus lived a life of acting as a Roman lackey and The "free life" of the accomplices. For, according to Spartacus, those lives were neither happy nor dignified, but a speck of dust under the feet of "Rome". It can be seen that the word "freedom" should have this meaning: happiness and dignity. Freedom can make people feel the joy of life, because people can freely find the way to happiness; freedom can make people feel the value of life, because the dignity of each person is as precious as the dignity of all people. Therefore, Spartacus chose to declare war on Rome, chose a path that he knew would lead to destruction, and chose to live to death.

What is free is real, and what is real is free. Only when we are free can we distinguish between true and false; when true, we can live from the heart. Spartacus, despite being a slave, was a real person. He lives for what he truly wants, for what he truly loves, for those who truly believe in him. He was given the fate of a slave, he was forced to live as a free man, he lived in an era of slavery, he faced a tyrannical Roman Senate and a powerful Roman army. However, he has at least one free and real choice: rebel against fate. What is even more commendable is that Spartacus not only chose to rebel against fate, but also chose to unite all slaves who are willing to become free people to rebel against fate! Even the most deprived slaves can have a choice, which shows that nothing in the world should be like this, and some are just willing to give up. Yes, the Spartacus uprising failed, and he himself was crucified; but his children were free, and to this day all free men who spurn slavery can be called the children of Spartacus !

——Even the most miserable slave can pursue freedom, who cannot pursue freedom? A man is a free man only when he fights for his freedom!

Only a free and real person can live a happy and dignified life, feel the joy of life, and understand the value of life. So why should a group of free people be afraid of others being free? Is it because enslaving one's own countrymen like pigs and dogs gives oneself money and status? Is it out of fear of being trampled on its glorious tradition and great order? Or is it because that cruelty and tyranny can make oneself happy? Where there are people there is inhuman slavery, and where there are people there are shattered shackles. Freedom and happiness are not natural human rights, but the privilege of brave warriors: fighting for freedom, fighting for survival, Spartacus is not the savior of any slave, every slave can become Spartacus!

Spartacus: I'm not a beast!

It is remarkable from the perspective of film history and historical films, but in essence it is the level of Italian directors

8.5/10. ①The legendary life of the slave Spartacus, the leader who led the ancient Roman slaves to rebel against the slave owners (although the rebellion failed in the end), and a power struggle between the populace (headed by Gracchus) and the aristocrats (headed by Crassus) in the senate branch line. ② Rendering epic sense: tone and service and setting (these also render the classical sense very well); a large number of deep focus shots (such as those clips of the male protagonist in the slave training ground); scheduling of various battles/big scenes (The scene switching, the composition [such as character standing and walking, setting the scene], etc.) are very good. Personally, I like the two parts of the seaside speech and the final battle.

Spartacus quotes

  • Gracchus: You and I have a tendency towards corpulence. Corpulence makes a man reasonable, pleasant and phlegmatic. Have you noticed the nastiest of tyrants are invariably thin?

  • Batiatus: Come with us. See to it I don't misuse the money.

    Gracchus: Don't be ridiculous. I'm a Senator.
