Out of the night that covers me
Through the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I see layers of darkness.
I thank whatever gods may be
Thank God for giving me,
For my unconquerable soul.
Unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
Even if you are held tightly by hell,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
I will not be afraid, nor will I be humiliated
Under the bludgeonings of chance
Hit hard by fate,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
My head was full of blood, but my head was raised.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Beyond the world of anger and sorrow,
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
It is not only the shadow of terror that rises,
And yet the menace of the years
And, in the face of future threats,
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
But I am not afraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
No matter how narrow the gate of fate,
How charged with punishments the scroll, no matter what punishments I shall bear.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the master of my destiny,
I am the captain of my soul.
I am the commander of my soul.
