The film shows the director's understanding and complex emotions of the Yugoslav nation through the legendary lives of the three protagonists—the intellectual and speculator Ma Gao, his friend Hei Zai, and their mutual lover Natalie. The first thing that impresses the audience is the bizarre storyline and the complex and full character of the protagonist. It can be said that except for Ivan, there is no absolutely innocent character here, especially Ma Gao, Hei Zai and Natalie. True liars who deceive others and themselves. Two of the classic lines of dialogue that recur in the film are Marco swearing to Natalie, "I never lie." Then Natalie replies, intoxicated and sad, "How beautifully you lie!" Hei and Marco No doubt they all truly love Natalie, but for the former, this love is just a romanticized embodiment of his personal heroism; for the latter, it is his speculation, like revolution, political participation, and arms smuggling. A successful asset in life. What about Natalie? It seems that she is as good as possible, and in order to live a safe and comfortable life, she can coquettish the black boy, ignore Ma Gao's lies, and even accept the pursuit of Nazi enemies. The director deliberately portrayed the heroine as pretentious, but in the first half of the film, she still flashes with innocence and ignorance. In fact, all three have no morals at all. In such a crazy place of crazy times, Kusturica tells us that Slavs don't need morals. The difference is that Natalie's immorality is sympathetic, and Blackboy because of his sympathy. Crude and even more absurd, making people laugh, Ma Gao's character is the most three-dimensional and complex.
Here we cannot fail to mention the three protagonists, Raza Ristovic, Mirajana Djokovic, and Mick Minojolovic, without their near-perfect performances, the film would have never been possible. Impossible to be so successful. They all started their acting careers very early and have now become top-notch excellent actors. The age of the characters in the film spans fifty years, and their emotional ups and downs are almost uncontrollable, but they are well-acted, and they are just right to let go and restrain themselves. Among them, Mick Minojolovic and Kusturica have worked together as early as "Dad on a Business Trip" and have a deep understanding of Ku's works. When he talked about the role of Ma Gao, he said, " The character I'm playing paints a mixture of all the history of the Balkans, a mixture of beauty, evil and destruction; almost half a century, no, more than that, I'm painting our own The soul."
Kusturica's films rarely show complete positive or negative characters. Although Ivan is innocent, but because of his stutter, he basically does not really participate in the activities that specifically promote the changes of the plot, and he rarely expresses his thoughts. , but silently on the sidelines as a witness. In the end, all the main characters are actually dead, but in a surreal fantasy, everyone is resurrected, loved each other, and held a grand wedding banquet to the roar of drums. The director made a summary speech through Ivan, who was sitting in a corner. Miraculously, even his stutter disappeared without a trace.
The carnival people did not realize that the land they were attached to had split off from the mainland and drifted farther and farther on the boundless waters. Kusturica silently told the audience that this was the fate of his homeland. At this time, how can we still not understand that his endless jokes are actually alleviating the deep wounds in our hearts?
