In order to protect selfish desires, conscience was killed again and again, but "scientists" who knew all of this kept aloof, even encouraged, and negotiated terms. And the time machine is just a tool to explain entering into multi-dimensional space. The film implies that the ending is doomed and that human suffering is inevitable. It would be a sin to develop unnaturally and break the laws of nature.
