"Ben X" - a gift for autism

This is my first time writing a movie review. I will focus on my own movie viewing experience rather than evaluating it. This is a movie that has brought happiness to my spiritual world, and I also want to give it a real feedback.

Ben X - game screen name, Belgian language, meaning "I am nothing".

Ben X is a player of the high-level, high-level online game "Overlord". He plays the game from 5:45 to 6:33 every morning, then washes up, has breakfast, and goes out to school.

His real name is Ben, and he is an "autistic" patient. He can come and go freely in the game, but he cannot adapt to this society.

Close the game interface and everything becomes difficult.

The film was released in 2007, and the script is based on true events. At that time, awareness of autism was not yet widespread, and children with autism attended ordinary schools.

Perhaps in order to increase the sense of realism, the filming uses a "documentary"-style narration.

I can't resist this interpretation. Years later, when people look back at the beginning, with years of emotional and rational reflection, they endowed that point with greater thinking significance, which made me think more calmly about what I saw. It will also whet the appetite, making the viewer even more curious about what will happen in the end.

Thankfully, the movie lived up to the expectations.

two

Before watching this film, there is a point that attracts me. There are a lot of game scenes in the film, and the scenes are constantly switching between reality and games. I was intrigued by this and went to look for it right away.

After reading it, my personal understanding is that Ben uses the logic in the game to understand the world. If the support of the game framework is removed, Ben's real world will collapse at any time. The game scene is therefore tragic.

This is also very consistent with the characteristics of autistic patients, who have strong mechanical memory and mechanical understanding, but weak "mentalizing ability", which enables them to complete mechanical tasks without being unable to integrate into the social environment.

PS. In fact, I recall that this film used a lot of shooting techniques, but I don't understand it and will not give a specific evaluation. Overall, this is an excellent work.

three

I watched this movie because of Yajun's recommendation. It is said that the first two-thirds will be relatively depressing, but "after the first two-thirds, the last third will have a colorful appearance."

However, even with Yajun's reminder and opening a barrage to accompany me, my feeling is "it's really depressing, the first two-thirds, if you don't know that the second third has a reversal."

Before watching the movie, I already had a good psychological construction, but at the third of the time, I felt like I was walking forward with a heavy load, wrapped in a tense and depressing atmosphere.

It is a rare experience for the audience to have this opportunity to experience Ben's heart, and probably because of this, I also fully realized Ben's happiness in the later stage.

Although the bullet screen at station b is quiet and quiet, it is a good company, but in fact, I regret opening the bullet screen, and I would like to be fully immersed in the film. Moreover, maybe without the bullet screen, the "colorful" in the later part of the film will be more amazing.

Four

In the end, what touched me most about this film was not its educational significance, nor its plot twist. Although "Ben X" has done a good job on these two points alone.

What touched me the most was how happy Ben ended up being, and how he got it. "Ben X" gives a real example of happiness, and the way he achieves happiness is not irreproducible.

Ben does not have the aura of the protagonist. Like every ordinary person, no one can really understand him after suffering. His parents, teachers and some classmates sympathize with him, but there is no way to help him out of the predicament. The only one who can save him is his own heart, believing that there are good things in the world.

Sometimes people need selective memory. So I wrote this film review to record a good feeling, and I hope they can stay by my side for a longer time.

When beauty appears, try hard to remember her appearance.

There are various ways to be happy. Kindness is good, gentleness is good.

5. About autism

The brain structure of people with autism is somewhat different from that of normal people. Most of them have below-normal mental development, and only a few have superior intelligence.

But most people with autism have some kind of talent, such as Ben in the film is excellent at the game, and learns quickly and well.

They are sensitive to details, and in their eyes the world is made up of individual details, unable to connect them into a whole. In an experiment that asked subjects to find a character in a detailed painting, most people with autism can quickly give an answer, while ordinary people need to look for a long time.

This explains their stubbornness and rigidity in their environmental requirements. The world is more of a permutation to them, and changing a little detail is turning upside down for them. They always choose the same way of life, because even some changes that ordinary people can't detect are overloaded for them.

Some people with autism can carry out normal work with a clear purpose, and can carry out language conversation with a clear purpose, but they will not "gossip". The lack of mentalization is another characteristic of autism.

Experiments have shown that autistic patients have clear cognitive goals, are good at point-to-point straight-line thinking, and cannot see meaningful "curves". They can only comprehend the correct result, not that different people will understand the same thing differently.

This may be determined by their innate development, and lifelong efforts may make progress, but it is difficult to catch up with the average.

In fact, everyone's brain is unique, and there is no objective diagnostic standard for autism. The patient's brain is just an extreme of the brain structure, which is the so-called marginalized group.

People do not pride themselves on being in the middle. Such marginalized people are not unacceptable, especially when you understand their perspective and know that they also have normal emotions and feelings. So I am very grateful for this movie.

six

At the end of the film, he said that people want to ride when they see a horse, but they don't know that a horse might not want to be ridden.

If horses could express themselves...

In one scene in the film, Ben took stimulant drugs. He was so excited that he hugged his mother and shouted that I felt that I was cured. He began to express himself incoherently, explaining everything that had happened in the past ten years. Autistic children also have feelings. Like normal people, they can love, be moved, feel guilty, be ashamed, be angry, and keep everything they care about in their hearts.

Thinking of this scene, you will not be confused why people should understand Ma, but will tell him, well, I can try to understand. It doesn't matter if the horse can't express.

A friend said, "Understanding is a beautiful word, and it is also a thing that is easier said than done, whether it is understanding others or understanding yourself." I hope everyone has an exploration and more understanding of the world.

It is precisely because it is difficult that we need to work hard all the time, and the world is a better place because of every understanding.

It doesn't matter, you have your own happiness.

You can have your own happiness.

  • [first lines]

Ben: [voiceover] It's hard to explain. It's hard to explain myself. But I never tell lies. Everything I say is true, even when I don't say a thing.
