There is always a hot sun, the name seems to be more poetic

I originally wanted to write a short review, but halfway through it, I found that I had a lot to say, so let’s change it into a film review!

The movie contains almost everything that one can experience in life, such as birth, death, abandonment, joining the army and fighting, abortion, love, friendship, family affection, growing up... The movie does not seem to be so difficult to understand from the perspective of Chinese people, but it can be understood from the perspective of Westerners. It is really not easy to make such a movie and finally be understood by others. After all, most people who receive Western orthodoxy are unacceptable to abortion.

The protagonist Homer in the film also cannot accept it, but growing up in an orphanage, he seems to be even more unacceptable to those irresponsible parents who were born without raising them. Because he was used to seeing examples of people who brought life but could not bring happiness to children, he finally picked up the scalpel, and at that moment, he began to reconcile with the most important person in his life, Dr. Large. This is also the main line of the film.

Homer received the care and care of Dr. Large since he was a child, but he was not satisfied. He hoped to break out of the shackles and get a new life, to experience all kinds of things in the world, to explore, to experience, and to enrich himself. In a word, leave this place where he grew up but cannot satisfy himself.

When he left here and experienced love, betrayal (or abandonment; after experiencing incest, friendship and the brilliance of human nature, he also became no longer rebellious and matured. At the same time, he knew that he only belonged to the one who needed him most and also him. The place that I needed most, I embarked on the road of return from now on, under the escort of Dr. Large, who will go to hell, I returned to the place where I should go.

When people are young, they don't know what they want, and they are vaguely dissatisfied with the status quo and life. Desperate to break through the cage and pursue self. But after experiencing some things, I found out that the outside world is not as good as I imagined, and the environment in which I grew up is not so unbearable. When you realize this, when you can face your own shortcomings calmly, and at the same time accept reconciliation with those around you, you will truly become mature.

I really like Lars Holstrom's films in the 90s. Whether it's "A Different Sky" or this "There's Always a Hot Sun", the seemingly calm and indifferent narrative has undercurrents from time to time, and the tension of the drama is very well controlled. "There's Always a Hot Sun" is not so much an American film, I feel it is more like a Swedish film; the male protagonist's expressions throughout the film are light, without exaggerated acting skills, long-winded dialogue monologues, and emotional expressions , but you can deeply appreciate the laughter and sighs in his soul, and touch the beating heart; thus, you are deeply moved by this young soul and cannot help but resonate. Homer's departure is a kind of rebellion against fate, and his return is a kind of obedience knowing his destiny. When he left, he walked into the mundane world like an outsider who didn't know the world; when he returned, he had tasted the happiness and sorrow of this world, and understood the weakness and unbearability of human nature, so that he could truly become a man with deep compassion and love. A guardian of life and free will.

I love this movie so much, it makes me feel so many things. Movies about love and growth always move me lastingly. In 1999, when there were many good films, being nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director, and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Award is enough to show the Academy's affirmation of this film.

The Cider House Rules quotes

  • [Mr. Rose is lying in bed, bleeding to death. He's just made Homer and Muddy promise to tell the police he was so upset over his daughter Rose running away that he killed himself]

Arthur Rose: That's right. That's the truth. I'm just tryin' to put things straight. Sometimes, ya gotta break some rules, to put things straight. Ain't that right, Homer?

[He looks at Homer who nods with reluctance resignation as he finally accepts this truth]

    Arthur Rose: [Smiling] Good.

[Then the light leaves his eyes and he's still]

  • [first lines]

[Opening narration; a couple of snippets of interspersed dialog are omitted]

Dr. Wilbur Larch: In other parts of the world young men leave home and travel far and wide in search of a promising future. Their journeys are often fueled by dreams of triumphing over evil, finding a great love, or the hopes of fortunes easily made. Here in St. Cloud's not even the decision to get off the train is easily made, for it requires an earlier, more difficult decision - add a child to your life, or leave one behind. The only reason people journey here is for the orphanage.

Dr. Wilbur Larch: I came as a physician to the abandoned children and unhappily pregnant women. I had hoped to become a hero. But in St. Cloud's there was no such position. In the lonely, sordid world of lost children, there were no heroes to be found. And so I became the caretaker of many, father of none. Well, in a way, there was one. His name was Homer Wells.
