The 1:2.35 anamorphic lens makes the living environment under the long-range lens relatively distorted. It seems that this era has changed life and society.

Close-up shots of people, especially from an elevated angle, express an extreme emotion.

The horizontal shot in the cell turned Franz's cell into a narrow strip, and the officer beat Franz.

The narrative of the film is not dominated by events, but a fusion of fragments of life. The voiceover of the letters written by Franz and his wife to each other is connected with the plot, and each scene is broken in the way of jump-cutting. Reflections on the proposition of the confrontation between dark deceitful faith and radiant pure truth. The editing and splicing of shots are not based on narrative, but are presented with the thoughts of the protagonist. Whispering strings flow gently under the picture and language. Make the whole film like a philosophical poem.

Waiting for the final death in the last prison, much like "Dancer in the Darkness", they are all undead who adhere to the truth, the good and the beautiful. Their own belief in the truth enabled them to overcome their fears. But the dancers in the whole play are more focused on perseverance, while secret is more inclined to struggle.

Franz, like Jesus, held fast to the truth in suffering, was an ascetic looking for light on this dark road, a martyr for resurrecting truth and faith, and a martyr who broke through the dark thorns to the road of light.

  • Closing Title Card: ...the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. -George Eliot
