During this day, Tarkovsky recorded in his diary:
Tonino and I came up with a great script idea (in my opinion) - the end of the world.

Someone confines his family at home because he is waiting for the end of the world. The wife has another son. The father was a devout man, and they had been locked up together for about forty years. Eventually, they were found and police and ambulance took them away. They are in bad shape. The eldest son told his father that it was a crime to hide the world for so long.
When taking them away, the younger son looked at him and asked, "Dad, the end of the world is coming?"

The origin of the brief thought.

Oh my God! That's what poetry is supposed to be like. This is a poem about the noblest sorrows of mankind. Why is every frame of the picture so extremely sad and silent. Quietly like the end of the world. However, the undercurrent is surging. This is called "force". Only the purest soul can be so perceptive and expressive. I love Tarkovsky.

Eugenia: Why? The translator's a very good poet.

Andrei Gorchakov: Poetry is untranslatable, like the whole of art.

Eugenia: You may be right that poetry is untranslatable. But music? Music for example...

  • Eugenia: So what did God say to St. Catherine?

Domenico: "You are she who is not, but I am He who is."
