on the outside as on the inside

When the outer war has not yet begun, the inner war has broken out. The binary opposition within us causes war.

Resistance and escape create duality, however, dependence on people and things and "love" are also.

Pierre's inner simplicity was really valuable in those times of war, but without the guidance and influence of good teachers and friends, the "simple" without wisdom would become dull and become a source of pain, because he did not know his preciousness, nor did he know how precious he was. Know what he can do for the world.

During the battle, Andre and Pierre were not afraid of death, but one was out of desperation, and the other was out of devotion.

Except for life and death, there is no big deal. All the grievances and hatreds seem so insignificant before death. When death is approaching, people have the opportunity to see their hearts clearly, but for this life, it is still too late.

True forgiveness is not "I forgive you", but finding that there is nothing to forgive.

Finally, to quote a passage from Pierre:

"They say suffering is misfortune, but if someone asks me, am I willing to be the person I was before I was a prisoner? Would I be willing to go through it again? I'd say, for God's sake, let me do it again Prisoners, when our lives are forced to go off course, we think we have lost everything, but this is just the beginning of a new and beautiful life, as long as we live, we will inevitably encounter happiness."

My favorite is that every episode Gillian Anderson is gossiping there.

It's full of great British narration. The scenes and costumes are impeccably beautiful. As for what people often criticize, it is too British and lacks the grandeur and depth of the original Russian nation. These statements are a bit hypocritical. Just like the Russian remake of Sherlock Holmes without complaining: it proves how good works take root in different regional and cultural environments.

War & Peace quotes

  • [first lines]

Anna Pavlovna Scherer: But mon cher ami, how can you be so calm? This... this monster, Bonaparte - he's crossed into Austria now and... who's to say that Russia won't be next.

  • [last lines]

Pierre Bezukhov: [voice-over] They say sufferings are misfortunes. But if I was asked, would I stay as I was before I was taken prisoner, or go through it all again? I would say for God's sake, let me be a prisoner again.

Pierre Bezukhov: Come, let's sit and eat and give thanks for our good fortune.

Pierre Bezukhov: [voice-over continued] When our lives are knocked off course, we imagine everything in them is lost. But it is only the start of something new and good. As long as there is life, there is happiness. There is a great deal... a great deal still to come.
