After reading the dior advertisement that Lynch shot, I suddenly wanted to briefly write about Lynch.
1. For Lynch, the image is a kind of art, a kind of simulation device of the operation of the human spirit (as Bergson said, "We will temporarily pretend that we have no knowledge of the theory of matter and the theory of mind, nor any knowledge of external World reality or conceptual war, so I only had images before.”) At the same time, images are a visual medium. In a series of typical "Lynch's" films, the attributes of images are gradually enriched, and Lynch's later creations pay more and more attention to the familiarity of the medium of images, so that more and more Yi favors the form of nested images for creation. Since Mulholland Drive, Lynch's films have always been meta-movies. On the one hand, the subject matter itself involves the production process of the general film industry, and on the other hand, "image of image" is one of its more and more frequently used techniques. Of course, the three image properties are interpenetrated and difficult to define.
2. This kind of interpenetrating relationship is densely distributed in every shot of the whole film. The image and the image segment are more like a vortex, and an image has “similar perceptual characteristics” in sound or visual image, etc. (magically) rather than logically (historically) alludes to other images. The whole film is formed in an extremely fine network of relationships. It can be said that Lynch conceived the film entirely based on pure image thinking. Therefore, even if watching Inland Empire, a visually rough and ugly film without visual pleasure, anyone who has some interest in video art can clearly feel that they are facing "video art".
3. Therefore, the success of the Inland Empire proves from another perspective that video art does not actually need beautiful images that give people visual pleasure. The most crucial aspect of video art lies in the "relationship", that is, how to use pure image imagination, use the pure sensory, emotional relationship between things (as opposed to logical text) to conceive how to schedule a video audio-visual , how images are connected to images.
4. But I guess the reason Inland Empire shoots with dv is not for aesthetics but to show the movement of the camera in a rough realism that is actually simulating the movement of a subject's consciousness leading to its deeper layers. This is why the horror atmosphere of the film is getting stronger and stronger.
Other odds and ends:
The actor's performance is derailed from the daily life, the lines are strange, and the characters are usually nervous, fearful, dull and abnormal
I like to split the main character of the protagonist (several people play one role)
Like to use rumbling muffled horror music
Twin Peaks 3 is largely comedy
I like the special effects of fifty cents, I don't think it's because of lack of money
