The heroine Grace is about to marry into a wealthy family, but the wealthy family is as deep as the sea. If you want to be accepted, you must play a traditional family card game. She unfortunately won the "hide and seek" and started a wedding night when she was chased by her "in-law's family".
There's a lot going on in the film, from cult symbolism to hilariousness and even a hint of Quentin's violent aesthetic. But I didn't expect such a hodgepodge of popcorn movies to be surprisingly good-looking.
I try to analyze several major features of the movie "Are You Ready?"
1. Whether a story is persuasive or not, the first is whether the characters in the story stand. Every character in this film can be said to be quite brilliant. A few shots or lines of dialogue establish the character of the character.
The heroine Grace is resolute and unpretentious. The series of emotional changes from the ignorance, ignorance, fear, and even trying to save the "in-law" family after the card game are reasonable and even beyond expectations.
The funny character of the rich family is also very interesting:
The male protagonist Alex is selfish, hypocritical, and cowardly. Daniel is kind but remorseful. Daniel's wife is a money-loving woman, a bitch who will do anything to achieve her goals. The mother-in-law and Grace are somewhat similar in character. They are both submissive on the surface and extremely strong and resolute on the inside. The father-in-law is a typical group of men who are strong in the outside world and panic in the face of trouble. The little sister-in-law was impulsive and panicked and did all her stupid things. The little sister-in-law blindly followed the crowd and wanted to stay out of it. There was also a pair of bear children who were being raised. The aunt was ruthless and extremely upholding family traditions. Obedient butler, three pug maids who give away heads. There are so many characters, each of which has its own distinctive character, and they all become the catalyst for the development of the plot, which is really awesome.
2. The heroine Grace is not like the heroine of adversity in traditional movies, who kills all the bad guys by her own strength. Instead, she unintentionally took advantage of everyone's character weaknesses. She first took advantage of Alex's stupid sister who killed the maid by mistake. Knowing the essence of this game, take this matter seriously, and don't know what happened if you don't die. Secondly, it exploits Alex's hypocrisy and cowardice. With the help of Alex after initially learning the truth, the door is opened and the monitor is destroyed. Eliminate the most unfavorable factors for your escape. In the car, she took advantage of the butler's seemingly rigorous but extremely extroverted character to gain a chance for escape. Then she took advantage of Daniel's kindness, not only letting go of herself, but also saving her own life at a critical moment. In the end, the big boss was used to have a human body explosion. The entire escape route of the heroine is completely grafted on the personality of each character. The characters stand still, and the plot goes smoothly. It really kills two birds with one stone.
3. The character building and story line of the movie are very well completed, and it is easy to get a passing score. Below are some bonus points.
Several laughs in this movie are also very good. For example, the little uncle got the bow and crossbow and didn't know how to use it. He went to the bathroom to check the video, which is very life-like. The little sister-in-law shot an arrow through the maid's head. Although it was bloody, it was inexplicably funny. Including Daniel's wife shooting Grace, with a serious face, she is bound to win, but she is 10 meters away. A lot of lighthearted jokes have been added to this tense escape scene.
The filming skills in the movie are also very attentive: ①The long shot of the wedding will eventually end up in the whole house. It is implied that the story will begin in this house.
② Before the game starts, Grace descends from the stairs, the camera gives a huge circular dome, and the pull-down is a circular staircase, which implies that the story of the movie starts and ends in this room. Including the music at the beginning and end of the game has the same effect as the dome and stairs, all suggesting that the story begins and ends here.
③ After the game starts, Grace carelessly hides herself, while the wealthy family on the other side begins to distribute weapons for hunting operations. This cross-cut creates a strong visual contrast.
④ Elements including nails that tie the hands and steel bars that pull the back are also commonly used techniques in horror films.
"Ready" isn't without its own problems as a good popcorn movie. 1. The movie adopts a conventional linear narrative, but as a family with an ancient background story, the audience will have a curious prying psychology. If the movie adopts interlude, it will be more vivid to intersperse the past stories into the movie.
2. Some viewers will say that the beginning of the movie tells a story from the past, which is also the second problem of the movie. Because of the concise description of the first story, the tension and suspense of the film are greatly reduced. The suspense that was revealed layer by layer was broken at the beginning of the film.
3. The third issue of the film remains to be considered, as the film adopts an unconventional ending. Viewers have expectations for this type of plot. We would have hoped that the heroine would fight back step by step, but the end of the movie leaves the solution to an invisible boss. Although it responded to the suspense left before in the story and broke the tradition of genre films, it did not meet the audience's expectations. It can be regarded as "you can't have both fish and bear's paw".
4. The fourth problem with the movie is that I mentioned at the beginning that this is a hodgepodge movie with many elements, which cannot be maximized due to issues such as time. You will find that there are funny places, violent places, cult places, horror places, suspense places, but they are all a little bit worse.
Although there are still many areas to be considered, the flaws do not hide the flaws. Especially in character building and story connection, this is a place worth learning from Chinese screenwriters and directors.
