Film Review, Messenger of God

After watching this movie, I didn't think Joan of Arc was a saint. From my perspective, she's just a girl with strong beliefs. As a child, he witnessed the destruction of his home and the slaughter of his relatives. I think she is a girl who loves fantasy and has absolute faith in God. And what prompted her to summon the courage to lead the army against it was faith. In the movie, she does not have a strong military ability, she only relies on her passion and determination and inspiration for the soldiers. For France at that time, they were not that bad. They were defeated in battle after battle, and the soldiers lost confidence. At this time, a self-proclaimed messenger of God, Joan of Arc, inspired them to become their backbone. They thought that these powers came from God, from God's messengers. So they have a firm following on the scramble. She firmly believed that she was the messenger of God who took France back from England. And her bodyguard had a crush on Joan of Arc. When Joan of Arc got angry and cut her hair because the generals didn't listen to her, it was he who comforted him. It was he who woke her up when she had been dreaming. When His Holiness withdrew his army and everyone persuaded her to give up, he said, "Of course I believe in you." I think behind this sentence is that I love you. You are a saint, a messenger of God. And I can only help you. Joan of Arc was not a saint, but she was a national hero.

At first I thought it was fantasy, but later I found out that it was just insane. By the end of the movie, I had no idea what the director wanted to express. The biggest failure of the film is that the death of Joan of Arc at the end does not provoke any emotional response such as sympathy, regret, sadness, anger, etc. in the audience.

Did you really not notice where Dustin Hoffman was when you watched it?

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc quotes

  • Cauchon: Father Vincente, you're the most venerable among us. What do you think?

Father Vincente: I think this trial is a masquerade, and I won't be part of it anymore. I'm willing to be her judge, but not her executioner.

Cauchon: That's what I'm trying to ensure.

Father Vincente: [In a reproving tone] A verdict comes at the end of a trial, Cauchon, not at the beginning.

  • The Duke of Burgundy: [to Joan] Personally, I don't believe in God. I don't believe in the Devil either. Perhaps that is why I am never disappointed.
