I was lost from the moment I saw you.

This sentence was said by Miss Woodruff, the female protagonist, in the dilapidated small hotel after expressing her affection with the male protagonist Charles.

In my humble opinion, it can be understood from two different levels.

This sentence is a love story that the heroine said when she was in love. Language itself is deceptive. That's why the heroine left for no reason, leaving behind the hero who abandoned everything for her but couldn't find her. The male protagonist is just a lever on the road of her self-redemption and pursuit of freedom. She has a momentary nostalgia for the male lead, or an unforgettable love, and what she loves most is herself. So everything is a means to freedom for her.

Or is this sentence true. She was in love with him. Also as she later said, "I have to end what has begun between us". She found out in her conscience that she should not let the male protagonist abandon everything for her.

Either true or false, maybe the heroine herself doesn't know it. Humanity is unfathomable.
