The small town of La Boca in Chile is like the end of the sky, facing the sea, quiet and comfortable, with a certain desolation of the world. Pablo Larrain's "Club of Priests" (also translated "Club of Atonement" in 2015) won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
The film begins with a quote from the first chapter of Genesis: "God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." From this, the film haunts from beginning to end. Misty Color is one of the most brutal films ever to reveal the evil of a priest, and it's harsher and more absurd than anything you've ever seen in such a film, even the award-winning ones.
Although the film about the priest's evil is only derived from the hoarse narration of a wanderer, the denial and cunning of the priest's family make the film full of unresolved hatred and confusion. The young and handsome pastor Garcia, as a spiritual teacher, was assigned by the Pope to this remote place to investigate why Father Matthews committed suicide. In fact, the old Matthews arrived at the priest's house only a few days ago. Early that morning, the priests were awakened by the noise outside the house.
The key character of the whole film, the homeless man who calls himself Sandkhan, asked to see the elderly Matthews, and complained that he was an orphan when he was adopted by a priest as a child, and he witnessed and personally was repeatedly sexually abused by the priest. The priests act for their own sake in the name of God. The priests who were so shouted that they could not live in peace were afraid that the residents of the small town would know. Father Silva handed Matthews a pistol and told him to go out and chase him away. Unexpectedly, Matthews took the gun and walked out of the house, facing Sandkan, and shot himself in the forehead.
Sadly, when Matthews first arrived, Sister Monica introduced him to the four priests and herself. Let him not have contact with the outside world and many other strict rules. Matthews said coldly that I'm not a criminal, and I'm not gay, why should I obey your rules. Yes, Silva, Odigo, Vidal, Hemirz, and Sister Monica formed an offensive and defensive alliance early on to fight against everything in the outside world, even the priests sent by the Pope.
Of course, their means of confrontation is to be forced. They will publicize all their crimes through the media and bring shame to the church. Specially trained Lingdi dogs earn income from racing. To put it bluntly, in the name of God, their daily prayers and repentance are just props to decorate their facades. Because these priests' homes themselves are the protective measures taken by the clergy after the investigation found that they had committed indecent crimes such as indecent crimes, in order to remove the priests and have to hide their eyes and ears, and avoid the suspicion and dissatisfaction of the public and believers, giving them placement.
The problem is, it's impossible to just wipe it away after someone's life has happened here. Garcia, who was on the mission of the Pope, had to confront these guys head-on. Sister Monica, whom he relied on, was actually a woman as venomous as a snake and scorpion. She greeted her with a smile and was used to double-edged swords. There is only one thing she has done, that is, she must do her best to cover up the crime and save the priest's house. Garcia, after checking these five people one by one, found that they were unfathomable, which made him take a deep breath. It is simply to defile the doctrine and the church.
On the other hand, if this priest's house is closed down and these people expose the evil deeds they have done, it will affect the entire religion, and no one can bear such consequences. The wise Garcia, on the hazy sea, had to sink his arrogant head and kneel to God, what should I do? The evil of these priests cannot be tolerated, but they must continue to live like dogs. This is the most painful, tangled and contradictory part of Garcia. He had to compromise. He knew that this was really against the will of God.
Garcia said you are all criminals. Garcia once made a rule that they should eat less meat and more vegetables, no dogs, no cats, no alcohol, and more prayers, all of which were taken as jokes. They're also counting on the dogs to win the regional competition and then go to the national competition in San Diego to win the top prize. A greyhound bought for 1 million pesos can't let it go to waste.
When Silva and Monica planned to carry out even greater evils, Garcia could only be silent. They continued to do evil. When the moon was dark and the wind was high, they killed all the participating dogs in the town, and then blamed their sworn enemy, the wanderer Sandkhan. While Vidal was away, Monica suffocated his favorite spirit dog with a condom. When Vidal came back to find out, he cried bitterly. Monica said "God knows, will you kill me?" "No" "Then will you forgive me?" "No, bitch!".
They didn't think they could get a foothold here without getting rid of Sonderkan, and they couldn't dissuade Garcia from closing the house of the priest. Sudkan, who has been tortured physically and mentally, has actually lost the ability to love as a man. Even in the face of the woman who loves him, he is still immersed in the priest's fear of his sexual assault. People in the town who didn't know the truth were punching and kicking Sandkan. When he almost died, Garcia, who had been indifferent and still had a conscience, helped him up, carried him to the priest's house, wiped his wounds and washed his feet. Dirt, and kissed him apologetically.
Then he quietly summoned the filthy priests, including Sister Monica, and said, "You have to take care of him, and if you give him a bed, I will forgive you". "I like being with the priest," Sandkan said innocently. Seeing his spiritual dependence on the priest just shows the power of darkness. Silva said "I'd rather leave". Vidal said "What's your name?" "Sundkan", "No, your name is Thomas". Silva said that would have to sterilize him. In fact, he is more poisonous than anyone else.
In the face of Silva's refusal, Garcia gently sang "Jesus is the most wise, you take away the sins of the world, show us kindness, give us peace..." Even if they pretended, they had to sing along, Even if they can't recall the kindness in their hearts, at least Garcia's concessions and compromises will allow them to continue to hang around in disrespectful ways. This is a greater evil, and there is not a single sincere repentance, just want to cover up the evil they have done in their life in an evil way. The far-reaching significance explained by the film is evident. This is exactly what touched me about this film.
Recalling that when Garcia questioned them, each of them realized the incarnation of God. Vidal, who loves dogs, does not deny the fact that he molested orphans. He said that he just wanted to care for them with God's love, just like I made dogs human. Garcia sternly says you are animalizing yourself. But he does not deny that he is gay, and he calls himself a "master of restraint", and he seems to think that spoiling orphans is not enough. Silva is the best at making up stories and covering up evil deeds. He said that he has been a pastor in the army for 35 years and is quite satisfactory. Garcia angrily asked, "What about the women you insulted?" He hummed and said, "I warm them with the love of God."
The almost demented Hemirz raved frequently, but in private he would steal Garcia's backpack, saying that he brought all our materials and wanted to kill us. The hot-tempered Odigo admits that Matthews was the gun they provided and made him kill himself, but he dismisses the previous indecency charges, saying it's normal, I'm just taking care of these orphans.
Monica, who was comforted by both sides, finally showed her gloomy, vicious and chilling qualities, and she threatened Garcia with it. She said coldly, please stop here, otherwise it will be made public through the media and shame the church. She said that I followed the Pope's call to preach from Bologna to Africa, then to Boston, then to Chile, and who felt my wholehearted love for God.
They say they love God, but in fact they love only the evil in their own hearts. In the name of God, doing one's own selfishness is the greatest evil. But no one can control them. As "Focus" reveals, if the crimes cannot be held accountable and they cannot be brought to justice, the final exposure will be pale. No matter what, it means doing nothing. All religious teachings are good for good, but in the process of thousands of missionaries, they each have their own way.
The problem is that in the process of spreading the Gospel, it is admirable to rely on one's own conduct to express piety and respect, but the many interests and selfish evils that appear in the execution are exactly what tramples on the teachings the most. Spreading the teachings is of course boundless merit, but if it is linked to the world, money, and selfish desires, then the church or mission place will undoubtedly become a heaven for their crimes in the name of God. is the most terrifying thing. Listening to the peaceful, beautiful, and pleasant gospel songs, believers originally came to purify their hearts to do good, but they were abused by evil deeds. Thinking about what it feels like, this is enough to make the world horrified. At least, "The Father's Club" gave people a wake-up call.
