I never thought I would say this but how on earth can one human being be sentenced to death by another human? We let the devil play god, and that's how we end up in hell. There's not a bullet-proof legal system since it is designed by us imperfect species so at the end of the day the decision is made by biased opinions.
Also it might seem not as important at this point but I do want to know who really committed the crime. It's unfair for the poor girl's parents who were depicted/indicated as villains - they were heartbreaking and fooled by the sheriff. The wound that seemingly healed was ripped apart again because of the sheriff's stupidity, arrogance and mistake but nobody cares to punish the sheriff and even the real criminals? Is that how justice is done? They might still be at large and threaten ppl's life, especially Brian Stevenson. But who cares now? BS is the hero, end of the story. The filmmaker doesn't even care to mention these in a titlecard. It is also a myth how they got 60 Minutes on board that easy and they just went in and interviewed people in the damn cell? It's just like whenever a princess sings the problem will be solved. When you got a problem, don't call the police, call the fk journalists!
Again I know I could get all the answers myself but that's not what a film is supposed to do, neglecting important facts and expecting the viewers to find out by themselves. I'm saying this because I'm not taking Just Mercy as a documentary - it's a scripted narrative film. But obviously it has its own agenda and it's already over two hours so...
Brie Larson - wtf? Look at her lines and acting, just terrible. Her acting diminish such a great character to a minion, so functional, so fake. Even her smoking seems perfunctory and superfluous. Yes, just like Anne Hatheway in dark water. Thank you both for making great real life women into a plain fictional side-kick.
Participant are doing great stuff. But I can't help thinking how it's sliding to make every meaningful story so cheesy. Stop monetizing people's remaining empathy. You don't have to use those celebrities to attract attention. They brought flux of money but downgraded the whole film with their programmed acting.
I understand now that they are rich and famous they want to have more of a social impact, build sort of positive image or whatsoever in the pc-infiltrated Hollywood. That's what she (hi Meryl) said. I'm torn. I don' t believe they, or the majority of them, really give a shit. It's just another real life acting. If they can take advantage of that, why not? But on the other hand, will people really buy the fucking expensive movie tix to get educated, informed, instead of just being entertained?
It's a good movie in a way that it triggers so much thoughts but at the same time it's not necessarily a must-see if your life is hard to bear enough and don't want to be preached any more. Jamie Foxx is good, Brie Larson is bad. Young police lad is cute. Writing and Michael B Jorden are both so-so. Standardized cinematography and subtle music. I'd gib a 6/10.
