2019 is really a young year for the American film industry. Except for a few films, which can cover everything, such as "Joker" and "The Irishman", although they are quite good films, they still carry a heavy American commercial flavor. , story story story, characters are always secondary. The films of various major directors this year are not very good, especially Quentin's. They say that art is not artistic, and storytelling is also average. The characters are the same, only the fame is the most famous.
In such an environment, Norton's debut is obviously better than "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" in terms of lens, scene, and drama, all above Quentin. But the common problem of most American movies is that the characters are too flat, and Nolan did not get rid of this shackle. After all, the most typical American, the result can be imagined.
The film reveals Norton's nostalgia for the classic Hollywood narrative. In the first hour, the rhythm is tight and the story is intricate. In the second half, the film tries to save Norton's character from an extra love line, but the effect of advancing this line is not good. , the direction of the story has unilaterally become the role of Willem Dafoe to guide Norton to clear the clues. For a protagonist with a high IQ, the image is getting weaker and weaker.
If the film explores the relationship between characters, the depth is much higher than the story presented now. As mentioned earlier, Nolan advocates the classic Hollywood narrative, and he only guides the audience to understand the truth of the whole event through these character relationships. The politics, interests and other issues hidden behind the incident should be told as the center of the film, but in fact it is still a process of inquiry. So from the point of view of the film, it is still on the surface of the incident, and there is no deep digging.
In the film, you can see some artistic scenes, such as Willem Dafoe's back to the light, and his brother facing the light. Although it is relatively blurred, it still feels an ambiguous existence, which makes people imagine.
Although there is a bit of artistry, the film can only be classified as a commercial film due to the central problem of the storytelling, and a rating of 3-4 stars is considered a reasonable rating. 5 stars must be pure fans or emotional audiences.
PS I am a fan, I will give one more star!
