When I started watching Downton Abbey from the first season, I could barely hold on. The plot is very bland, and the lines are too long and too long. As an English scumbag, I can't read the subtitles. After watching one or two episodes to get used to the rhythm, I started to play.
It's been two or three months since I watched the sixth season. After the death of my eldest cousin, some of the plots have been forgotten a bit, because from the very beginning, this show did not rely on the wonderful plot to catch people's attention, nor was it an American blockbuster-style hormone Exciting and not Asian-style sensationalism makes people worry. This film makes people let go at any time, but it really attracts people to continue in another way - the way of telling the story is very rational, calm, elegant and full of sense of order, which is lacking in the impetuous modern society way of expression.
When shooting people, there is almost no background music, the lens does not move or zoom, the people are mostly group portraits, rarely close-up, no filters, plus still interior scenes, it is like a painting. Although everyone is the protagonist, the eyes of the protagonists are too objective and calm, too ruthless (please compare the slow-motion backlit kiss scenes in Korean dramas and Japanese dramas). In each episode, there are several shots from different angles and time points to shoot the distant view of the manor. The background music must be played, the zoom must be zoomed, and the camera must be shaken. It feels as if the trivia of the characters are just daily embellishments, and the house that has lived through a long time is the real protagonist.
Compared with buildings, small human beings are only a few hundred years old. And as long as it is carefully maintained, the building can exist for thousands of years without problems. Space itself is the container of time and history, and Downton Abbey is the essence of such wealth and culture, as well as the connection between emotion and blood, so that three generations of grandparents will spare no effort to maintain it and inherit it. Because if something beautiful has not been passed down, it is almost as if it never existed. From this point of view, the manor is indeed qualified to be the stage of the story, the container of the story, and even the protagonist of the story.
A hundred years of life is nothing. And it is the mission of the nobles to know their own insignificance and pass on the huge family business. In addition to making money in various ways, it is also necessary to maintain the dignity of the nobles, even if they are swollen and fat, because this way of life is also part of the inheritance.
And what we call freedom is really freedom? After all, in a barren land, you can reclaim at will, but if you create a lot in the Louvre, it can only be destruction.
The theme that has perpetuated civilization for thousands of years has many other things besides being alive. To be humble, reverent, and dignified in order to protect something unnecessary is the spirit of aristocracy as I understand it.
