After watching "Ip Man 4", Ip Man played by Donnie Yen has not made a breakthrough and is still a cliché. Bruce Lee played by Chen Guokun is amazing, but only limited to the point of the plot. Instead, it is President Zhonghua and Taijiquan master Wan played by Wu Yue. Zong Hua, I am deeply impressed. This is also one of the rare characters in the series of "passing through" in the Ip Man series.
Wan Zonghua is a complicated character. In a foreign country in Chinatown, he secretly protects Chinese immigrants who immigrated to the United States through the All-China Federation; He gave up a hand; he was also a conservative and extremely traditional person. Whether it was facing Bruce Lee who taught martial arts to foreigners, or facing his daughter who was full of personality, he was a serious and old-fashioned face; He is a Chinese discriminated against by foreigners, struggling to survive and maintain balance in forbearance.
If Ye Wen represents the ideal warrior, then Wan Zonghua represents the reality warrior (Bruce Bruce represents the warrior who explores the transformation from reality to ideal). Most of the behaviors of real warriors like to rest on their laurels, and even immerse themselves in the possession of the ancestors and magical powers. Some of the moves they practice are transformed into performances, which are not directly proportional to actual combat; at the same time, the behavior of real warriors is also a kind of stop fighting. The development of ideas is the inheritance of the point and the harmony, and it is a symbol of the exchange and coexistence of different schools and cultures. The above is particularly evident in the battle between Wan Zonghua and US Marine Warfare Instructor Patton.
The battle between Wan Zonghua and Ye Wen was almost even, but they were defeated by Barton's iron fist. I think there are at least the following points: First, the physical quality of the two determines the basis of victory or defeat. Wan Zonghua, who is of medium stature, does not have an advantage in his own strength compared to European and American people like Patton, who are tall and powerful. More importantly, Wan Zonghua is completely unable to compete with the Marine Corps instructors in terms of comprehensive factors such as training intensity, endurance, physical fitness, and combat ability. The destructive power of Wan Zonghua's punch is incomparable to that of Patton's. This may be the difference between Chuanwu and modern fighting techniques. Second, the two concepts of combat are different. Wan Zonghua upholds the inheritance of martial arts, upholding the point of view, civilized competition, and the winner can be determined. This is especially evident in the first three rounds of the opening game. In the first three rounds, Wan Zonghua was able to knock Barton down with almost one move, but it was only knocked down. On the other hand, Patton was not greatly affected, and the viciousness and ferocity of his tricks were evident, almost incurring the death of Wan Zonghua. By the time Wan Zonghua reacted, it was too late. Third, the two have different attitudes towards combat. Patton is eager to win and has no distractions, and it can be seen that he is also quite experienced in combat on the battlefield, so he only seeks to win the battle. From Wan Zonghua's tone and eyes when he said "I'll fight you", it was obvious that he felt the contradiction in his heart. If you lose, you may be able to suspend and resolve some disputes, but it will make Americans discriminate against Chinese. If you win, so what? Can the Americans who "don't want to drive away the Chinese and even Chinatown all the time" can give up because of Wan Zonghua's victory? Will there be hatred and intensification of conflicts over this? ... Wan Zonghua's inner entanglement has caused him to be passively defensive and have no effective attack at all. In short, this scene completely presents a complex and three-dimensional Wan Zonghua, and through the heart-wrenching battle, it shows the status of the Chinese in the United States and the different martial arts culture of China and the United States.
Finally, let's talk about Wu Yue, the actor of Wan Zonghua. Wu Yue is my favorite action actor. Although I don't see much of his works, his movements are neat, energetic, and especially chewy. The first time I saw Wu Yue's work was his portrayal of Yang Wulang in "The Female General of the Yang Family". He portrayed Yang Wulang's simple, detached, and heartfelt feeling of the common people very well. After that, it was Zhang Jizhong's version of "Journey to the West" a few years ago. The Monkey King played by Wu Yue was first-class in both appearance and performance, especially in his movements and eyes, which were "smart" and perfect. I think Wu Yue is at least one of the best performers of Sun Wukong in mainland dramas after Liu Xiaolingtong. Next is the police officer played by Wu Yue in "Slaying the Wolf: The Greedy Wolf". His movements are solid and simple, his strength is strong, and he is very good-looking. Until now, in the popular "Ip Man 4", Wu Yue finally broke into a butterfly! Some people like to compare Wu Yue and Wu Jing, because these "Double Wu" debuts are similar, but one is already a superstar with billions of box office sales, and the other seems to be a tepid martial arts star. I don't really like to use the box office to explain everything. I just hope that at the moment when stunts and Weiya are flooding, actors like Wu Yue and Wu Jing can produce more good works. The day of reunification!
